DIENES, ANDRE DE
Marilyn
Taschen GmbH. 2004. (ISBN: 9783822832257). Hardcover, 30.5 x 24.8 x 2.5 cm. Hardback with D/J, book good condition, D/J mostly good but 2 inch tear to front with small scuffing. TEXT NOT IN ENGLISH. The making of Marilyn; Fashion photographer Andre de Dienes's life was changed forever one day in 1945 when he met a lovely young aspiring model named Norma Jean Dougherty. He instantly fell in love with her innocence and charm and the two were briefly engaged. They took many adventurous road trips together in those early years, de Dienes shooting Norma Jean in every possible natural setting in his original, inspired style. He soon built up a huge portfolio of stunning photographs of the smiling brunette which helped to launch her model career and, a few years later, a film career that was to make her a legend. His entire relationship with the star, including many private moments shared only between the two, is detailed in de Dienes's secret memoirs, which were discovered when Monroe fans ravaged his home after his death in 1988. Never before published, the memoirs tell a beautiful story of love and friendship from the point of view of someone who knew Marilyn intimately; describing the transformation from Norma Jean to Marilyn Monroe - the evolution of a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled megastar - from an inside perspective, they shed light on a little-known side of Marilyn. From their trip to see Norma Jean's mother in a mental hospital to Marilyn's visit to his home a few days before her death, de Dienes recounts all of the emotional moments they shared. The combination of de Dienes's memoirs and an extensive selection of his Monroe photographs (which numbered in the thousands) makes for an unprecedented, personal exploration into the psychology, history, and iconography of the world's favorite movie star. About the Author Steve Crist is a book editor and photographer. His first project for Taschen was Marilyn by Andre de Dienes. He is currently in production on projects with Playboy, Polaroid, and photographer William Claxton. A California native, Steve is based at the Taschen America offices in Los Angeles. DIRIE, WARIS
Desert Flower
Virago Press Ltd. 1998. (ISBN: 9781860496066). Paperback. Waris Dirie's story puts "rags to riches" to shame. The "Desert Flower" started life as one of 12 children of a Somali nomad family, a people with no written culture, where the basic unit of currency is the camel. Faced at 12 with the prospect of marriage to a 60-year-old man she didn't know, she broke all the rules and ran away, surviving a traumatic trek across the desert to end up in London, as a maid to the Somalian Ambassador. It was in McDonalds that her striking beauty was "discovered", leading to a career in modelling and another as an ardent campaigner against female genital mutilation (circumcision). As a novel it would be unbelievable, as Waris survives circumcision, rape, arranged marriage, a lion attack--you name it, she's lived through it. But the book is remarkable less for its deliberately dramatic set pieces, and more for its haunting evocation of the little told life of Somalian nomads, seen from a child's telling perspective, where life centres on the beloved camels, the horrors of womanhood are still an exciting mystery, and the nights are filled with the smell of frankincense. Desert Flower is a recollection of such gentle beauty that "rags to riches" seems hardly appropriate. DOBSON, CHRISTOPHER
Carlos Complex
Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. 1977. (ISBN: 9780340213612). Hardcover. Hardback with D/J in good condition. 1977 1st edition Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. The lethal, tubby personage of "Carlos Martinez," most feared of international terrorists, has already been meticulously etched by Colin Smith (Carlos, p. 148). Dobson and Payne, two British journalists, are more glib. As a result, Carlos takes on aspects of an evil Third World James Bond. From Paris or London headquarters, he plans his death raids, dispatching a Yugoslav consul here, a Latin American colonel there; women adore him, and he uses them for "safe houses" as he moves on to mastermind the OPEC attack in Vienna and the Entebbe raid. Dobson and Payne are not much concerned with Carlos' putative KGB affiliations; they see him as the lynchpin in an international "pool of mercenaries," a veritable knighterrant of the forces of darkness. Like Smith, they follow Carlos' tangled relations with Japanese and German terrorists; also, and more interestingly, they finger Libya's Colonel Qaddafi as the "paymaster" for the hit men - claiming among other things, that Carlos was entrusted with foiling Kissinger's Middle East settlement. Ranging farther afield, the authors suggest that the tactics of terrorism were developed in Latin America (Cuba, Guatemala); the new breed, however, is the transnational entrepreneur - terror is the commodity in which men like Carlos deal. Despite obvious immersion in their subject matter, Dobson and Payne rely a great deal on secret sources and - necessarily - on much circumstantial evidence. A final chapter borrowing from Lenin's "What Is To Be Done?" raises the prospect (credited to Daniel Moynihan) of creating an organization to fight the "First Internationale of Terrorism"; the language is that of an anti-insurgency textbook, and such a solution may provoke more anxieties than it allays. - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, for sale, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, first edition, signed copies, non-fiction books delivered world wide. DUGAN, MARK
The Grey Fox: True Story of Bill Miner - Last of the Old-Time Bandits
UK, University of Oklahoma Press. 1992. (ISBN: 9780806124353). Hardcover, 22.4 x 15 x 3 cm. Condition good, hardback with dust jacket ref ZKVQ. Of all the outlaws in the Old West - and there were many hundreds of them - Bill Miner, the last of the old-time bandits, came closest to matching the polularity of England's Robin Hood. Jesse James, Billy the Kid and John Wesley Hardin may have been better known, but none could command the reverence accorded Bill Miner by people in every walk of life, from businessmen to housewives. He had a magnetism like no other. Active for more than four decades, Miner began his criminal career in California in the 1860s and ended it in Georgia in 1911. He stole horses and robbed stagecoaches, and when railroad tracks replaced stage roads, he robbed trains. He was caught and imprisoned only to be released or escape and to rob again. He considered his victims to be corporations rather than people, and he did not consider it wrong to rob, for instance, the Canadian Pacific Railway, which he said had plenty of money and robbed the public. In this book, Mark Dugan and John Boessenecker trace Miner's life from Onondaga, Michigan, to Milledgeville, Georgia, where he died in prison in 1913. They reveal his character and his unusual ability to charm men and women alike, even his victims. He carried weapons but did not kill; he always worked with an accomplice or two or sometimes three, usually younger men; and the authors contend that he is the only proven homosexual outlaw the West has known. DUIN, VERONIKA VAN
A Rainbow over the River: Experiences of Life, Death and Other Worlds
Clairview Books. 2003. (ISBN: 9781902636474). Paperback, 21.7 x 14 x 2.1 cm. Paperback in good condition. For many years Veronika van Duin has been able to see 'over the river' - experiencing spiritual dimensions and worlds hidden to the physical eye. With clairvoyant vision she has perceived angels and demonic beings, people who have died, and even events taking place in other parts of the world. But with the passing of her mother - Barbara Lipsker, MBE - in 2002, Veronika van Duin's spiritual journeys became more concentrated and frequent, and she began to see people who had recently crossed the threshold of death, including the victims of an aeroplane disaster and a suicide bombing. In A Rainbow Over the River the author tells her remarkable story, from her earliest glimpses of the Other Side to her most recent excursions 'over the river'. In the second part of the book she records an intensely moving diary of her mother's passing, rich in love, care and a profound understanding of suffering. She describes how, despite the sadness of losing their mother, Veronika's family see the death as a transition to a new existence, and ultimately as a great festival of life. In the third section of the book she speaks of her mother's life as a pioneer of Camphill, a social movement that provides home and work for people with special needs. She also offers thoughts on birth and death, grief, healing, prayer, and the meaning of existence. A Rainbow Over the River is a glorious celebration of life, illumined through a knowledge of death and the eternal nature of spirit. About the Author VERONIKA VAN DUIN was born in Scotland and is married with three grown-up children. She trained as a nursery nurse, and for many years lived with her family in community with people with special needs. Here she discovered the work of Rudolf Steiner, which provided the foundation for her spiritual striving. She currently works and lives in a Camphill Community in Northern Ireland. Veronika van Duin runs seminars and workshops for homemakers, and is the author of Homemaking as a Social Art (2000) and A Child in Community (2002). ISBN 1-902636-47-3 1902636473. Used: Acceptable.

DURRELL, GERALD MALCOLM
My Family and Other Animals.
Penguin Books. 1977. (ISBN: 9780140013993). Paperback, 1.0 x 4.5 x 7.2 inches. Paperback in average condition. Very readable. Amazon As a self-described "champion of small uglies," English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but ended up as a delightful account of his family's experiences that were, according to him, "rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas." As a 10-year-old boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with "all those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids." Durrell's descriptions of his family and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that "all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely true") are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book. Soaked in the sunshine of Corfu, where Gerald Durrell lived as a boy with his "family and other animals," this book evocatively chronicles his five-year sojourn on the Greek island. With hilarious yet endearing portraits of his eccentric family and their many unusual hangers-on, My Family and Other Animals also captures the beginnings of Durrell's lifelong love of animals. In its passionate understanding of Corfu's natural history, this is an entertaining and enduring memoir. Used: Acceptable.

EDITORS, CHARLES RIVER
Shirley Temple and Judy Garland: Hollywood's Most Famous Child Stars
white a4 ish R shelf upstairs, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. 2013. (ISBN: 9781492330882). Paperback, 15.2 x 0.4 x 22.9 cm. Condition good, clean. ref ZKVQ Includes pictures of the child stars and important people, places, and scenes. Includes Temple and Garland's own quotes about their lives, films and relationships. Includes a Bibliography on each for further reading. Shirley Temple remains the most famous child star of all time, but even this designation fails to reflect the magnitude of her popularity during the era in which she worked. While it is true that she was not the first child actor to reach Hollywood fame, she was the first - and to this day, perhaps the only - star who rose to the very pinnacle of the Hollywood elite before she even turned 10 years old. For this reason, it is no exaggeration to view Shirley as the progenitor for all of the child actors that succeeded her. Moreover, her cultural importance constitutes an even more important barometer through which to measure her overall significance. Not only was Shirley a film star, but she had a monumental impact on a generation of children who grew up during the Great Depression, with her plucky optimism emotionally uplifting an American public struggling both financially and emotionally. She was not only a young actress but also a brand name, someone who offered fathers and mothers hope for their children to achieve the same success as the famous child star. For all of Shirley Temple's fame, it is no doubt surprising to many that her actual films received scant critical acclaim. Her films were never mentioned on critical "best of" lists, nor did they regularly appear on the list of nominees for the Academy Awards. In fact, even though most everyone has viewed at least one of her films, it is unlikely that most people could name many of her films. How exactly did Temple first reach Hollywood fame, and how did the many films she appeared in between 1934 and 1938 - the height of her career - build her fame to its lofty peak even as they were quickly forgotten? In many ways, Judy Garland's rise to fame seems almost predestined. Not only was she a national sensation at a young age, but her parents and sisters were all vaudeville entertainers. On top of that, Garland's parents owned and operated a movie theater, making it all the easier to draw the conclusion that singing and acting were simply professions which she was born into by virtue of her pedigree. Judy's early childhood quickly demonstrated that she had a gifted voice that developed well beyond its years and seemingly did not require any formal training in order to achieve success; her first performance before a public audience came when she was still a toddler, and she would continue to act up until her death, never pausing for more than a few months at a time. That Garland was able to secure starring roles almost immediately after signing a contract with MGM in 1935 only corroborates the belief that Garland was practically born with the ability to succeed in show business and the motion picture industry. Of course, Garland might be known today based more on her demise than anything else, and there's no denying that one of the most fascinating (and tragic) aspects of her life story is the manner in which her downward spiral occurred with the same rapid progression as her meteoric ascent. Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47, but she had lost control over her life years earlier and was actually fortunate to live as long as she did. This book profiles the lives and careers of the two most famous child stars in American history. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Shirley Temple and Judy Garland like you never have before. Good.
