MORLEY, SHERIDAN
Judy Garland
NB M black white text nearly a4, Pavilion Books. 1999. (ISBN: 9781862053885). Paperback. Paperback in good condition, small creasing to front cover. Morley and Leon's profusely illustrated overview of the singer-actress beloved as much for her pathetic life as for her performances has the signal virtue of acknowledging her core fandom gay men. Garland's appeal to gay men quite possibly arose out of her love, however misplaced, for her improvident and alcoholic as well as homosexual father. One very close friend was a gay man, two of her five husbands were homosexual, and she urged her daughter Liza to marry the homosexual Peter Allen. Complementing Garland's affinity for gay men was her image as a psychologically needy prodigy callously exploited by managers, including her own mother and infamous movie mogul Louis B. Mayer. This aspect of Garland, gay men fancied, mirrored their own plight vis-a-vis mainstream society: prized for their talents, despised for their essence. Actually much more concerned with Garland's career history than with her gay-icon status, this profile is an ideal "first book" on the arguably greatest cult superstar. Ray Olson. Used: Acceptable.

NADLER, JO-ANNE
William Hague: In His Own Right
Politico's Publishing. 2000. (ISBN: 9781902301655). Hardcover, 1.5 x 6.8 x 9.8 inches. Hardback with D/J in good condition. 2000 1st edition Politico publishing. Michael Brown, London Independent - "The best service in representing the real Mr Hague has been done, not by his spin doctors and advisers, but by Jo-Anne Nadler." At the close of the last Conservative government William Hague was a little known junior cabinet minister. Within weeks the 36-year-old had been elected leader of the Conservative Party, with a mission to rebuild its fortunes after a devastating defeat. The leader of the world's oldest political party was best known for the speech he had given to the Tory Party conference 20 years previously. This biography of Hague illustrates his swift an determined rise through the party's ranks. It analyzes the influence which drove a teenager to take up politics with a passion that has never faded even since 1997, when as a party leader he faced his toughest criticisms and biggest challenges. The first ever biography of Tory Party leader William Hague - At the close of the last Conservative Government William Hague was a little known junior Cabinet Minister. Within weeks the 36 year old had been elected leader of the Conservative Party, with a mission to rebuild its fortunes after a devastating defeat. The young leader of the world's oldest political party was best known for the speech he had given, as a fifteen year old, to the Tory Party conference twenty years earlier. This first biography of Hague illustrates his swift and determined rise through the party's ranks. It analyses the influences which drove a teenager to take up politics with a passion that has never faded, even during the last three years when as party leader he has faced his toughest criticisms and biggest challenges. Political journalist Jo-Anne Nadler shows how the 'Tory Boy' became Tory leader and assesses his performance as he squares up to the real test of his political career - the next general election. Although this is not an authorised biography, William Hague has co-operated with the author and given access to his family and senior colleagues. - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, for sale, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, first edition, exlibrary, signed copies, non-fiction books delivered world wide.
