BOYNE, WALTER J.
De Havilland Dh-4 from Flaming Coffin to Living Legend
Washington, D. C.: National Air and Space Museum, 1984. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. ISBN: 0874742773. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping. The text pages are clean and bright. "The Airco DH.4 was a British two-seat biplane day bomber of the First World War. It was designed by Geoffrey de Havilland (hence "DH") for Airco, and was the first British two-seat light day-bomber to have an effective defensive armament. The DH.4 was developed as a light two-seat combat aircraft, intended to perform both aerial reconnaissance and day bomber missions. One of the early aims of the design was for it to be powered by the newly-developed Beardmore Halford Pullinger (BHP) engine, capable of generating up to 160 hp. During its first years of flight, it was tried with several different engines, perhaps the best of which was the 375 hp (280 kW) Rolls-Royce Eagle engine. Armament and ordnance for the aircraft consisted of one 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun for the pilot and one 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis gun on a Scarff ring mounting for the observer." "Caidin bought and restored to full airworthiness the oldest surviving Junkers Ju 52 aircraft, a Ju 52/3m, Serial 5489, which he named Iron Annie. Caidin was pilot-in-command of Iron Annie on November 14, 1981, when 19 people walked on one of its wings, a world record. He was one of a small number of pilots to have successfully taken off a Junkers Ju 52 in less than 400 feet (120 meters). After touring extensively among shows of vintage military aircraft, or warbirds, Iron Annie was sold to Lufthansa during 1984. The airline renamed it Tempelhof, and continues to use it today, for charter and VIP flights. Caidin chronicled the warbird restoration movement generally in Ragwings and Heavy Iron, and the restoration and further adventures of Iron Annie specifically in The Saga of Iron Annie. His novel Jericho 52 also incorporates many of his experiences with Iron Annie." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, EMORY B. BRONTE
Landing Fields the Roads of Aviation
California: California State Chamber of Commerce, 1932. Other. B&W Illustrations; C1932 -33. This is a Chamber of Commerce flier regarding a committee put together to determine if, when and where landing fields for aviation should be developed in the state of California. Unfortunately, the flier (made up of one smallish sheet, folded three times) has cracked completely at the bottom crease and has separated. The top crease has cracking as well, though is still attached. This report / flier was either written by, or the output of work by Emory B. Bronte. There are two long strips of tape shadowing to the front cover and both inner pages. "Bronte, a native of New York, had gone to sea at age 15 before entering the Navy in World War I. After the war he joined Isthmian Steamship Company, working his way up from third mate to master. In 1923 he relocated to San Francisco to work for McCormick Steamship Company, after which he became the Pacific Coast representative of the Inland Waterways Corporation. Along the way he had authored a book on navigation, but government service had also whetted his interest in the law, a field he planned to study after the 1927 flight was over. He had taken flying lessons and had soloed in a Curtiss JN-4 ‘Jenny’ but had no actual pilot’s license." (from HistoryNet). Fair .

CASEY, LOUIS S. / SMITHSONIAL INSTITUTION / NATIONAL AIR MUSEUM

The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have some toning / yellowing to the spine and the page edges. The text pages are clean and bright. "Under the auspices of the U. S. Army Air Service, the Fokker T-2 made the first nonstop U. S. Transcontinental flight in 1923. Two failed attempts at a west-to-east crossing were followed by a successful east-to-west flight when Air Service Lieutenants Oakley Kelly and John Macready took off from Long Island, New York, on May 2 and landed at Rockwell Field, San Diego, California, on May 3, slightly more than 26 hours and 50 minutes later. The airplane was the fourth in a series of transport designs by famed Dutch manufacturer Anthony Fokker and his chief designer, Rheinhold Platz. Manufactured as a Fokker F-IV, the aircraft was purchased by the U. S. Army Air Service in June 1922 and re-designated the Air Service Transport 2, or T-2. Required modifications for the transcontinental flight, such as increasing the fuel capacity, making structural reinforcements, and adding a second set of controls, were carried out at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio."
