Palo Alto, CA: Hiller Aircraft Corporation, 1958. Other. B&W Illustrations; This newsletter has illustrated covers and a glued spine. The newsletter is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are clean and bright. "The H-23 Raven performed as a utility, observation, and MedEvac helicopter during the Korean War. Model numbers ranged A through D, F and G. The H-23A had a sloping front windshield. The H-23B was used as a primary helicopter trainer. Beginning with the UH-23C, all later models featured the "Goldfish bowl" canopy similar to the Bell 47. The Raven used Hiller's "Rotor-Matic" cyclic control system, with two small servo rotor paddles offset 90 degrees to the main rotor blades. The paddles were attached to the control column, so that movement of the column would cause the pitch of the servo paddles to change, loading the main rotor blade so that the desired cyclic changes to the rotor occurred. The OH-23 had a top speed of 97 mph (84 knots). The Raven had a two-bladed main rotor, a metal two-bladed tail rotor. Both the OH-23B and the OH-23C were powered by one Franklin O-335-5D engine. "Starting in the 1950s or before, Bendix Pacific designed, tested, and manufactured hydraulic components and systems, primarily for the military. In the same facility avionics and other electronic hardware was designed, manufactured, and documented in technical manuals. Much of this operation was relocated to a new facility in Sylmar, CA where they had a large deep indoor pool for testing sonar. Telemetry components for the RIM-8 Talos surface-to-air missile included transmitters and oscillators in various frequency bands; the missile itself was designed and built by Bendix. They built and installed the telemetry system in all the ground stations for the first crewed space flights. For this program, they developed the first cardio tachometer and respiration rate monitor system so that a ground-based physician could observe an astronaut's vital signs. MK46 torpedo electronics also came from this facility. Other diverse products included radar detectors in aircraft that identified ground missile tracking and ground missile launch at the aircraft. In the 1960s they produced an anti-lock brake system for military aircraft using established technology similar to Dunlop's earlier Maxaret. The technology is similar to the notched wheel and reluctor now used in cars. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .

COURTNEY, FRANK T., The Eighth Sea

The Eighth Sea
Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1972. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The price clipped dust jacket has several tears, nicks and chips missing. The spine of the dust jacket has some toning and darkening. "Frank T. Courtney (1894-1982) was born in London and was one of the few aviators that could make the claim that he was there for it all. He started his career with an apprenticeship at the Grahame-White Aircraft Company in 1913 and attained his pilot’s certificate in August 1914 flying primitive box-kite airplanes. He attained the rank of Captain while serving in the Royal Flying Corps in WWI while flying in a Morane-Saulnier “Parasol. ”After the war Courtney became a test pilot for De Havilland and in between testing planes he was an avid air racer. The early 1920’s saw Courtney pioneer airline service routes between Britain and the European Continent across the English Channel for Daimler Airways. In 1925 Courtney tested the newly invented autogiro and helped with its development into a practical concept. Courtney’s next pioneering venture came in 1927 and 1928 when he tried and failed on two separate occasions to prove the concept of an airline service route between Europe and North America by flying unsuccessfully across the Atlantic from east to west. Blue Ridge Summit, PA: Aero Publishers, 1987. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0830683917. Trade PB. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light rubbing and wear to the book covers, along with some light scratching. "As American dominance in the Pacific Ocean began to face competition from Japan in the 1930s, the U. S. Navy contracted Consolidated, Martin and Douglas in October 1933 to build competing prototypes for a patrol flying boat. Naval doctrine of the 1930s and 1940s used flying boats in a wide variety of roles that today are handled by multiple special-purpose aircraft. The U. S. Navy had adopted the Consolidated P2Y and Martin P3M models for this role in 1931, but both aircraft were underpowered and hampered by inadequate range and limited payloads. Consolidated and Douglas both delivered single prototypes of their new designs, the XP3Y-1 and XP3D-1, respectively. Consolidated's XP3Y-1 was an evolution of the XPY-1 design that had originally competed unsuccessfully for the P3M contract two years earlier and of the XP2Y design that the Navy had authorized for a limited production run. Although the Douglas aircraft was a good design, the Navy opted for Consolidated's because the projected cost was only $90,000 per aircraft. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

"The story like the vital wartime link itself, stretches from the shores of the United States, down to South America, across the Atlantic, Africa, the Middle East, and on to India and finally across the forbidding, often deadly “roof of the world” – the Himalayas – to China. There was nothing commonplace about any of the adventures Culbert and Dawson so excellently document. There was certainly danger at times, but things to laugh at as well, as Pan American’s secret wartime operations sent Americans around the world. The book is excellently illustrated with both rare photographs and publisher Ron Davies’ superb maps. " (from PanAm) ; Signed by One Author. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

F-102a Delta Dagger in Action - Aircraft No. 199
Carrollton, TX: Squadron/Signal Publications, 2005. Stapled wraps. ISBN: 0897474945. Illustrated by Don Greer & David Gebhardt. B&W and Color Illustrations; This is an oblong paperback book. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some lightish rubbing and wear to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger[N 2] was an American interceptor aircraft designed and manufactured by Convair. Built as part of the backbone of the United States Air Force's air defenses in the late 1950s, it entered service in 1956. Its main purpose was to intercept invading Soviet strategic bomber fleets (primarily the Tupolev Tu-95) during the Cold War. A total of 1,000 F-102s were built. A member of the Century Series, the F-102 was the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter. It used an internal weapons bay to carry both guided missiles and rockets. As originally designed, it could not achieve Mach 1 supersonic flight until redesigned with area ruling. The F-102 replaced subsonic fighter types such as the Northrop F-89 Scorpion, and by the 1960s, it saw limited service in the Vietnam War in bomber escort and ground-attack roles" (from Wikipedia).
