[HAMMARSKJÖLD, DAG / PHOTOGRAPHS].
[A collection of original photographs from the United Nations Press Department documenting Hammarskjöld's time as General Secretary]. (New York) 1953-1961.
Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations 1953-61. He died in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia on his way to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis. He was awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize. This collection contains 22 photos (25.4 x 20.5 cm) of Hammarskjöld's time in office including photos from different UN Security Council meetings, press conferences and assemblies, and others from his official visits to Burma, Thailand, Congo and India. The photos have printed captions on the reverse. Another 29 photos were taken at his New York suite at the UN headquarters just days after his plane crash. The photos illustrate the conference room, his office, the social areas and a private area, all elegantly decorated with contemporary furniture, notable pieces of art, and his collection of books. The UN has one of the world's finest art collections with contributions from its member States. Hammarskjöld refined the collection with works of art that would coincide with the UN's vision of a world at peace. Provenance: Count Wilhelm Hans Fredrik Wachtmeister (1923-2012), who served as the Swedish ambassador to the United States between 1974 and 1989. He is included in a photo taken during Hammarskjöld's visit to India in 1959 when W. served as his personal secretary.

4to. Pp. (iv), 176, 178-304. Half calf on marbled paper boards, spine ruled in gilt and with a red title label. Occasionally some minor browning. Second edition, first published in 1667 in only 500 copies. A scarce Swedish collection printed at the private press of Count Brahe in Wisingsborg by the German bookprinter Johan Kankel. They are the first proper travel accounts published in Sweden. Comprises: I. Nils Matson Kiöping's narrative of his voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Arabia, Persia, and further on to the Far East. His story was partly imaginative but became enormously popular at the time. Kiöping was employed as a bosun on a Dutch ship which in 1648 took him to Guinea and later to the Cape of Good Hope. See Lasse Berg, När Sverige upptäckte Afrika, Stockholm 1997, pp. 11-15. II. Olof Eriksson WillmanÕs account of a voyage on a Dutch East India ship to East India, China and Japan between 1648-53. He visited Java which at the time was a Dutch colony. III. WillmanÕs interesting and accurate account of Japan (with separate title page dated 1673) which he visited in August 1651 for some months. He was able to participate in a Dutch embassy to Edo (Tokyo) which was reached in January 1652. His account of Tokaido, the ÒEast Sea RouteÓ, is one of the earliest known in European literature. Also includes a translation of Francois CaronÕs account of Japan. See Hjärne, Två svenska Japanfarare, pp. 17-83. IV. An account of a journey from Moscow to China.

KOOPS, MATTHIAS:, Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events, and to Convey Ideas, from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. London, Printed by Jaques & Co., 1801.
KOOPS, MATTHIAS:
Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events, and to Convey Ideas, from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. London, Printed by Jaques & Co., 1801.
Pp. 274. With engraved frontispiece of an Egyptian papyrus. Old ownership signature on title. Contemporary calf on marbled boards, expertly rebacked to style, with title label. The second, revised and much enlarged edition (first 1800). This edition was printed on remanufactured white paper and became the first book printed on recycled paper in the West! The appendix (pp. 259-274) is printed on paper made from wood pulp. Matthias Koops was a pioneer of mechanical paper production with great experience of manufacturing from waste paper at Neckinger mill in South London. He invented new processes for making paper from wood pulp rather than from rags, and for recycling paper itself so it could be used for printing. Between 1800 and 1801 Koops was granted three patents for making paper from a number of unusual substances. The first edition of this work was printed entirely on yellow paper made from straw. This version of the second edition was printed on recycled paper with the exception of the frontispiece which was printed on straw paper. It includes much statistical information about the paper industry in Britain and elsewhere in Europe at the time. Dard Hunter (1947), pp. 332-40, 375-6, & p. 523. Cf. Bigmore & Wyman p. 399.
