Baschet, L.
Paris Illustre, Complete Run of 13 Issues, 1885
Paris, France, A. Lahure, Imprimature-Editeur; L. Baschet, Libraire-Editeur, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. An item scarcely available to the trade in this state (First Edition) and condition (being a sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy of the Tome Troisieme, measuring 13" x 17", comprising thirteen [13] monthly issues comprising the entirety of 1885 [including two published in April]). Bound handsomely in marbled paper over boards, three-quarter leather, with scuffed tips and edges, but with newer, clean, unmarked endpapers, with neither highlighting nor underlining anywhere. Paris Illustré was first published in 1883, and these 13 issues are rich with steel engraving and other forms of illustration, in black-and-white, duotone, and color-tinted engraving, too. Each issue is devoted to a different theme. January, 1885's issue is themed "Les Aerostats et la Navigation Aerienne," with several articles by Gaston Tissandier, with big, broad sweeping panoramic views of the French countryside, and with following articles devoted to "La Conquete de L'air," "Les Voyages Aeriens," "Les Ballons Militaires et la Poste Aerienne," and the like, including the growth and development of the dirigible. Fevrier, 1885's issue is devoted to culture and the night-life in France, while Mars, 1885's is given over to "Les Tremblements de Terre," by Emilien Chesneau. Additional issues are given over to "L'Opera" (Avril, 1885), "Guerres et Expeditions Coloniales" (Avril et Mai, 1885), "Les Coulisses du Salon" (Mai, 1885), "Le Duel et L'escrime" (Juin, 1885), "Aux Environs de Paris" (Juillet, 1885), "La Marine Francaise" (Aout, 1885), "Le Monde Politique" (Septembre, 1885), "Au Chateau" (Octobre, 1885), "La Bourse" (Novembre, 1885), "Noel" (Decembre, 1885). Many illustrations are full-page and full-color, and in many cases, double-page. The colors appear to have been added by hand. A web-site devoted to the history and founding of the periodical notes that it was the son of Ludovic Baschet, René Baschet (1860-1945), who founded in 1883 this large-size magazine. The periodical became apparently the very first to feature full-colored pages. The aquarellist Eugène Grasset became something of a house artist beginning in 1884 and for several years, more than two dozen interior full-pages or magazine covers.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
