[KIRKBY, CHARLES MAJOR]:
A Forced March from My Home in Old England, to My Home in the Regiment. Bangalore, Printed at the Columbian Press, by Thomas Beare, 1848.
. Small 8vo. Pp. (iv), 203, (1) with errata leaf tipped in. Original cloth, rubbed and spine ends chipped. Rare travelogue of a journey made in 1846 by an officer returning through Europe to his regimental base in India. The authorship is attributed to Charles Foveaux Kirkby, then a captain in the Fourteenth Madras Native Infantry. The account describes the visit to Paris and then is mainly devoted to his stay in Rome. From there he passed through Naples, Sorrento, Malta and Alexandria before taking a steamer from Cairo to Madras. This work is one of only two known from the Colombian Press at Bangalore! The second work is a Tamil language book printed in 1850. See: D.E. Rhodes article in The British Museum Quarterly, vol. 34 no. 3/4 (1970), pp. 83-86. Seems scarce, we've only found two library copies (British Library and Princeton University). Not in Diehl.
