JESSUP, HENRY HARRIS:
The Women of the Arabs. New York, Dodd & Mead, (1873).
. Pp. (ii), x, 372. With frontispiece and thirteen wood engraved plates protected by tissue guards. Publisher's decorated brown cloth printed in gold and black, with some very light wear. Old ownership signature on front paste down. A few pages and the plates with light foxing. First edition, extremely rare. This work dealing with the role of women in society and female education in Lebanon and Syria is one of the earliest of its kind. Henry Harris Jessup (1832-1910) was an American missionary who came to Syria (now Lebanon) in 1855 where he stayed and worked until his death. He served as acting pastor of the Syrian Church of Beirut for more than thirty years. He functioned as secretary of the Asfuriyeh Hospital for the Insane from its establishment and also becoming missionary editor of the Arabic Journal, El Nesrah. Jessup writes about the situation for women in the Mohammedan world in general but he also explains about the Druze religion; the extreme Shi'ite group Nusayriyyah; missionary schools for girls in Syria (and Lebanon); Druze women; Beduin Arabs; the cities of Homs and Aleppo; and at last there is a chapter written for children. Smith J21.

This translation is based on a manuscript discovered in Cairo. A Latin translation with comments (in dissertation form) was published in 1814-15. K N Ö S , Gustav (ed.). [Kitab Qissat al-`asr wuzara wa-ma gara lahum ma`a ibn al-Malik Azad Baht]. Historia decem vezirorum et filii Regis Azad Bacht insertis undecim aliis narrationibus. Göttingen, Heinrich Dieterich, 1807. 8o. Contemporary boards covered with green paper. sold First Arabic edition of a series of Persian tales known as Bakhtiyar-namah, a frame story deriving partly from the ancient Sanskrit Panchatantra (known in Arabic as Bidpai) and often added as a supplement to the Arabian nights. The present edition is based on an Arabic manuscript discovered in Cairo: a Latin translation with annotations followed (in dissertation form) in 1814. It is an elegant little book, well-printed on excellent laid paper with a very slight greenish cast. With a tiny corner of the first 3 leaves (counting from the Arabic side) and free endleaf apparently nibbled by mice, not approaching the text, but otherwise in fine condition. The spine is faded and the paper covering the boards shows a few tiny defects, but the binding is still very good. Lovely and elegant first Arabic edition of a famous set of Persian tales. Richard Burton, tr., Arabian nights (1884-1886), 10, item 174.3 (p. 441); Schnurrer 419. OMLIBRIS EURO 3000 (!)

With inscription on title "Ab anni 1714 die Ve Decembie Joh. Emundi Wettrenius".Rare first edition of the first Swedish printed work dealing with foreign travel. It is a Funerary Oration for Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna, also known as Resare-Bengt (Bengt the Traveller). Includes an appendix, with separate title, about his life and a description of his two journeys to the East based on his own diary notes. Bengt Oxenstierna, born into a Swedish noble family, educated in Germany and later served at the Italian court. He travelled extensively throughout Europe and made two journeys to the Orient. The first tour, which started in 1613, took him to the Holy Land and during his second journey between 1616-1620 he travelled extensively in the Levant. He stayed in Constantinople for some time and later continued to Syria, Bagdhad, Babylon, and Isfahan where he resided for about two years. He travelled throughout Persia as far as the border of India. On his return journey he went by foot through the Arabian desert to Egypt and continued by ship back to Europe. Oxenstierna's manuscript of the second journey has been lost, and the only extant facts about the travels are to be found in the present work. Hierta 1135: Òr.r.r.Ó. Warmholtz 7408. LAWRENCE, THOMAS EDWARD:
Seven Pillars of Wisdom, A Triumph. London, Jonathan Cape, 1935.
. Large 4to. Pp. 672. With four folding maps, 51 full page plates, of which 4 coloured and 3 facsimile manuscripts. Publisher's quarter morocco on buckram covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignette on upper cover, marbled endpapers. Upper edges gilt, others uncut. A few small scratches on upper cover, some spots to outer edges. Original dust jacket, with tears and spine partly gone. Housed in a specially made cloth box. First published edition, limited to 750 copies, of which this is no. 68. The famous autobiographical account by T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") of his legendary part in the Arab rebellion against the Ottoman Turks between the years 1916-18. Lawrence did not believe the text would be of interest to the public in general and at first only allowed limited publications for friends (in 1922) and subscribers (in 1926). Lawrence was very involved in the production of the Seven Pillars. To finance the project he authorised Jonathan Cape to publish a heavily abridged and simplified version called "Revolt in the Desert" in 1927. The Seven Pillars is lavishly illustrated with photographic plates and portraits from sketches, and folding maps. The illustrators were the best British artists of the day: Wadsworth, Nash, Roberts, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Dobson, William Nicholson and others. Also included a copy of the Times from May 1935 with two pages of editorial about Lawrence, and testimonials from friends and colleagues including David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. A handsome copy of this noted work, called by Churchill "one of the greatest books ever written in the English language". O'Brien A041.
