Contemporary calf, spines with five raised bands, richly decorated in gilt and with title labels, lighlty rubbed, small repair (expertly) to one rear cover. First published in Paris 1790.De Lesseps accompanied as Interpreter on La Perousse circumnavigation which was designed to follow up on the voyage of Bougainville in establishing a French presence in the South Pacific. Departing from Brest in 1785 the expedition sailed through the South Pacific, and then up the coast of China to Kamchatka. In 1787 De Lesspes left the expedition at Kamchatka to return to Paris overland through Siberia with documents, views and maps of the first two years of the voyage. He thus became the only survivor of the ill-fated expedition. This narrative contains detailed observations on the manners and customs of the inhabitants along the route as well as descriptions of plant and animal life. A printed list of donors loosely inserted. Original cloth with title labels on spine, lightly soiled. First edition, limited to 500 copies (of which 100 were signed).Mannerheim, Finnish-born officer in the Russian army, covered approximately 14,000 km on horseback during his two-year journey along the Silk Road. He travelled from Russian Turkestan, through Chinese Turkestan and Western China via Gansu and Shaanxi to Peking. The initial mission of the expedition was to study conditions in northern China and "other military objectives" but was later expanded to also collect archaeological and ethnological material. The first part of this work contains Mannerheim's diary and the second contains scientific descriptions of the collections of many famous scientists. With seven engraved folding maps (two joined together), two maps with tears without loss. Contemporary full calf, spines with five raised bands richly decorated in compartments, slightly rubbed, head of spine to volume two chipped with small loss. Six leaves with marginal repair in volume one (no text missing), wormholes running through some leaves and minor marginal water staining in the beginning of volume two. Second French edition of these important travel accounts of the first German trading mission to Moscow and Persia, sent by the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp.Adam Oelschläger (Olearius), renowned mathematician and German scholar, accompanied the embassy as secretary. He published a comprehensive account of Russia and Persia. Johan Albert Mandelslo was a German adventurer who participated in the same expedition to Isfahan, where he separated from the party and made his way to India. In 1639 he sailed for England calling at Ceylon and Madagascar. Mandelslo's informative account is published posthumously by Olearius. It includes information about South-East Asia, Japan and China. The seven maps are: La Livonie ou Liflande; Moscovie; Le Cours de La Riviere de Wolga; Mariis Caspii ostium ad Wolgam; Mare Caspium siue Hyracanum Persis Kulsum; Maris Caspii alluens Hyrcaniam siue Kilan; and Les Indes Orientales.
