He travelled from Russian Turkestan, through Chinese Turkestan and Western China via Gansu and Shaanxi to Peking. The initial mission of the expedition was to study conditions in northern China and "other military objectives" but was later expanded to also collect archaeological and ethnological material. The first part of this work contains Mannerheim's diary and the second contains scientific descriptions of the collections of many famous scientists.
