BALCH, Edwin Swift., Glacieres or Freezing Caverns.
BALCH, Edwin Swift.
Glacieres or Freezing Caverns.
Philadelphia, Allen, Lane & Scott 1900. Octavo publisher's cloth; [8],337pp, 31 illustrations - photo plates and diagrams in the text. A sparkling copy.
¶ First edition. Undoubtedly the essential book on glacieres - not be confused with caves that freeze and thaw according to season. The true glaciere is always frozen - some have been used as ice mines - and, as displayed in the illustrations, can contain spectacular displays of ice forms. Balch became aware of and quickly enamoured with subterranean ice in 1877 and spent quite a bit of time hiking and climbing around Europe and America exploring every ice cave he could find. He provides a list of every glaciere that he knew of around the world, investigates the science, and finishes with an impressive bibliography.

Del Modo di Misurare le Distantie, le superficie, i corpi, le piante, le provincie, le prospettive, & tutte le altre cose terrene, che possono occorrere a gli huomini, secundo le vere regole d'Euclid, & de gli altri piu lodati scrittori.
Venice, Francesco Sanese 1589. Small quarto 18th(?) century half vellum; 145,[3] leaves, elaborate woodcut title, medallion portrait of Bartoli, numerous woodcut illustrations, diagrams, 2 folding plates, tables. Occasional spots, a very good copy.
¶ Second edition of this handy book on surveying, measuring, and perspective demonstrating the quadrant, astrolabe and compass, particularly relative to architecture. Kemp (in The Science of Art) points out that the methods of triangulation and instruments described here are still in 'essentially their mediaeval form' though the instruments were 'mediaeval instruments of considerable elaboration and precision'. First published in 1564 this edition uses the same wood blocks and the famous woodcut title which Sanese used for Alberti, Vitruvius and other architectural books. Bartoli's reliance on Alberti is natural enough as he was the translator of several of his books but he hasn't neglected many sources, classical or modern. Best known now as a preceptor of Alberti's theory, Bartoli himself is deserving of more attention. He crops up everywhere in Florentine history, as academician, linguist, music historian (and as an instrument maker in one reference I found), provost of the baptistery, and as architect of the now 'four star accomodation' of Hotel Palazzo Ricasoli. Whether Bartoli would be pleased that his building has survived at all is hard to guess and you will understand why if you look at the images of the Palazzo which are easily found on the internet.

Harmonies of Political Economy, translated ... with a notice of the life and writings of the author, by Patrick James Stirling.

Aus Wundersamen Garten. Zehn Radierungen.
Verlegt von Hilmar Kalliefe in der Graphik-Mappe [c1920?]. 350x275mm portfolio of publisher's cloth backed patterned boards titled in gilt; ten etchings (image size 93x70mm), loose as issued; each etching signed, numbered '1' and titled in pencil. A 1922 Christmas gift inscription from (?) Roubauer inside the front cover.
¶ Was more than one copy of this printed? I can't find a record of it anywhere - which seems inexplicable given the charm and proficiency of these fantasias of miniscule life. Baum is credited as the illustrator of a couple of books published in Berlin in the mid twenties but all else remains unknown to me.

BEALE, Lionel S., Life Theories: their influence upon religious thought.
BEALE, Lionel S.
Life Theories: their influence upon religious thought.
London, Churchill 1871. Octavo publisher's brown cloth; xii,97,[2]pp and six coloured plates. Spotting of the endpapers but a nice, bright copy.
¶ A good example of the weight of authority arrayed against wrong-headed fashion. Beale was no lightweight in the medical establishment and Churchill were authoritive publishers of medical books. Beale stood firm against the germ theory and here he stands firm against physical theories of nature. The coloured plates are from microscope studies - which Beale is possibly now best known for - evidence that this is no mere theological argument.

De BERENGER, Lt. Col. Baron [Charles Random].
Helps and Hints How to Protect Life and Property. With instructions in rifle and pistol shooting. &c.
London, for the Proprietor by Hurst 1835. Octavo publisher's green grained cloth (rebacked with the original spine preserved); viii,286,[2]pp, two folding lithograph views, eight etched plates by George or Robert Cruikshank, wood engravings through the text. A leaf torn without loss, a little browning of the lithographs, the rebacking perhaps a bit thorough but a rather good copy in a modern cloth slipcase.
¶ How not to leave a bank; how to deal with footpads, whether on foot or in a carriage; and countless other useful tips on how to survive in London, on the highway and in the country (''eject out of a room, how to, anyone with certainty'' surely works in town or country). The last 30 some pages, which includes the etchings and lithographs, is an advertisement for de Berenger's Stadium, or British National Arena which covered 24 acres of Chelsea. The Baron de Berenger, or Charles Random, who has been described variously as an inventor, sharpshooter, print colourer and stockmarket fraud, set up his Stadium in 1831 and held modern Olympics there in 1832 and 1838. He certainly had no claim to the rank of Lt. Colonel but there is some uncertainty about his claim to his title; it may have some validity. The Cruikshank brothers seem to have had a closer relationship with Berenger than mere hired illustrators: Arthur G. Credland, in an article on Berenger in 'Arms & Armour' (2006), speculates that through their keen interest in archery and shooting that one, or both of them, taught at the Stadium and he recounts a less than illustrious heritage for Berenger transmitted via the Cruikshanks.

BERRY, Edward Payson.
Where the Tides Meet.
Boston, Arena Publishing 1893. Octavo publisher's cloth; a most misleading nautical extra illustrated title. A rather good copy.
¶ First (only?) edition? A New York thriller that isn't in Hubin and should be. Mostly set in the grimmer parts of New York and featuring a wealthy young do-gooder - fitting the Arena imprint - we have a murder, a detective, a scheming lawyer, a pickpocket with a monkey accomplice ... what else do we need? A gunfight? a crushed and bloody corpse? a river of blood? Can do. Being published by Arena may not have guaranteed your novel would die in dark and perpetual obscurity but it got you well on the way.

BILLET, [Felix].
Traite d'Optique Physique.
Paris, Mallet-Bachelier 1858-59. Two volumes octavo half gilt morocco (corners a touch worn); 14 folding plates. A crisp, handsome set.
¶ Celebrated - perhaps that's too strong a word - for his bilentilles de Billet, or split lens, Billet's work on polarisation, refraction and interference is of the kind often described as magisterial. This usually means solid, well regarded and free of lunatic theories. More engaging perhaps was his apparatus that made visible multiple rainbows.

 BINET, Rene., Esquisses Decoratives.
BINET, Rene.
Esquisses Decoratives.
Paris, Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts [c1905]. Folio, loose as issued in four fascicules in illustrated wrappers, all in publisher's portfolio of cloth backed illustrated boards; [2],14pp and 60 plates, 13 pochoir and a few others with a second colour added, b/w illustrations through the text. A rather good copy.
¶ Binet, like many architects and designers, followed Haeckel into the microscopic world for grotesque and fantastic inspiration but married such modernity with historicism in a singular way. Durant (in 'Ornament') calls Binet 'in many respects the typical French Art Nouveau designer' which, apart from being too dismissive, is just not right. Many of his designs, particularly the coloured graphics, are ultra modern high art nouveau but much of his work has an oddly arcane, recherche effect - in which something as modern as an electric light switch modelled on the forms of diatomes or radiolaria and treated with Beaux Arts tradition becomes a mysterious if not menacing almost gothic artifact. Without claiming anything of the same stature, or even similar results, for Binet he could probably be more usefully likened to Gaudi. This is an exposition of ideas for every school of design that Binet could encompass - from architectural detail to pochoir graphics; shop fronts to tapestry; stained glass to gardens; jewellery to mosaics.
