CLAPPERTON, George.
Practical Paper-Making. A manual for paper-makers and owners and managers of paper mills ...
London, Crosby Lockwood 1894. Octavo, excellent in publisher's cloth; xii,208pp and two publisher's lists, the second dated 1901, 16 illustrations on eight plates. Inscribed 'H.J. Spicer Esq from his brother Sam April 1904' - surely members of the then current generation of paper makers.
¶ First edition. Though it took a few years to sell there were more over the next thirty odd years. I think the last was revised by the next generation of Clappertons (Robert Henderson) in 1929, the same year he published his 'Modern Paper-Making' which presumably superceded this.

CLARK, C.H. Douglas.
The Story of the Atomic Bomb. A popular review of the principle discoveries which have led up to its production.
London, The Machinery Publishing Co. [1945]. Octavo printed wrapper; 52pp, illustrations & diagrams through the text.
¶ An early Englishman into print on the bomb: his preface is dated 20.9.45 and his "ms. was framed before the official British and American reports were available". Clark was at Leeds University, not a lightweight in the world of atoms, and claimed a history of warnings about the "impending release of atomic energy". Warnings seem forgotten in his now gung-ho enthusiasm for this "wonderful messenger of peace" given an international "new growth of of moral sense".

The Australian Christmas Box: a series of stories ...
Melbourne, Cameron Laing [1878?]. Octavo publisher's printed wrapper (signs of use, a touch ragged); two full page illustrations. Small hole in a margin touching a few letters that looks like a production flaw. Pretty good.
¶ Clarke, Robert Whitworth and Waif Wander (Mary Fortune) have done the right thing and provided tales filled with madness and murder. The others ... meh. Grosvenor Bunster's effort is a revolting, heartwarming tale of redemption a la Christmas Carol.

 CLARKE, Marcus.., Long Odds.
CLARKE, Marcus..
Long Odds.
Melbourne, Clarson Massina 1869. octavo publisher's blue cloth blocked in gilt and black; eight wood engravings by Thomas Carrington. Minor blotches and smudges to the covers, signs of use, quite a good copy.
¶ First edition of Clarke's first novel, previously serialised in his own 'Colonial Monthly' (a short lived venture). "A wretched tale of folly and baseness" but not quite a thriller in the modern sense - the murder, after all, happens near the end of the book. It would not be out of place though in a shelf of sensational novels. Clarke purposely avoided writing a novel set in Australia, preferring to explore what was to become a popular genre - the young colonial 'back home' - carving a new destiny out of the wilds of London and the counties.

CLARKE, Marcus., The Mystery of Major Molineux, and Human Repetends.
CLARKE, Marcus.
The Mystery of Major Molineux, and Human Repetends.
Melbourne, Cameron Laing 1881. Octavo modern cloth; title page dusty with a small piece from the bottom corner - without its front wrapper for a while it seems - but rather good once you're past that. Without the slip announcing that half the profits would go to Clarke's widow and children.
¶ First edition and hard to find. Clarke’s last work and just posthumous; R.P. Whitworth’s preface is an obituary. Major Molineux is a Tasmanian psychological suspense thriller which for "intensity of sustained interest and soul—thrilling excitement it is only surpassed by Edgar Allen Poe ..." (preface). Possibly quite true though the conclusion is unsatisfyingly modern in its inconclusiveness. The Human Repetends, an earlier story and set in Melbourne, has similar "weird, physiological, and psychological" interest.

CLEGG, Thomas Bailey., The Bishop's Scapegoat.
CLEGG, Thomas Bailey.
The Bishop's Scapegoat.
Londo, John Lane 1908. Octavo publisher's illustrated cloth blocked in gilt black and cream. Minor signs of use, a bit canted; quite good.
¶ First, probably only, edition of Ballarat bred Clegg's thriller murder melodrama mostly set in New Caledonia. Clegg was a journalist, lawyer and magistrate who in the eighties had investigated the penal system in New Caledonia and the indentured labour industry in Queensland. The cane fields found their way into his 1907 novel 'The Wilderness' and New Caledonian prisoners into this. It may be a spoiler but I'll tell you anyway: the men on the front cover are the Bishop of Capricornia who murdered his brother-in-law in Paris and the Frenchman sentenced for that murder. But rest easy, there is a twist.

Birmingham [c1936]. 15x23cm publisher's printed wrapper with split pins; 29 illustrated sheets printed on one side, numbered to 25 with a couple of gaps and some bis and clearly complete. Rather good in a ragged but complete printed envelope postmarked February 1936 and addressed to a Birmingham recipient.

[Nagayama Shiki Kinko Mokuroku].
Tokyo, Nagayama 1911 (Meiji 44). 18x13 publisher's printed wrapper; [34]pp interspersed with a scattering of varied decorative tissue leaves, halftone illustrations.
¶ Safe catalogues are hard to find but not hard to open. The first few photos illustrate the burning of a small structure with one of their safes inside and the open safe safe and sound, so to speak. But I find it hard to believe that a company that would go the trouble of mounting a small protective tissue over the illustration of the portraits of the emperor and empress inside the safe would deliberately put their portraits anywhere near a fire.

Symphonions.
NY printed, the company [1894]. Octavo publisher's printed wrapper (chipped and close to detached); 29pp, illustrations. Outwardly dishevelled but decent enough. Loosely inserted are some small sheets which seem to be an owner's catalogue of their discs.
¶ Fourteen models, from the modest No.28 (crank driven) to the sublime Eroica, near seven feet of neo-renaissance kitsch and 'Very Loud, Magnificent Music; Expressive.' Also a partial list of the steel music discs; a large and complete list is announced to be ready on Jan 1, 1895. But nowhere can I find an address to send to.

Tom Collins [Joseph Furphy].
Such is Life being certain extracts from the diary of Tom Collins.
Sydney, The Bulletin 1903. Octavo publisher's olive cloth blocked in dark green and red (spine a little browned, a dash of flecking to the sides). Clipped review of Furphy's poems pasted to the the preliminary advertisement leaf. A pretty good copy.
¶ First edition - and hard to find in decent shape - of one of Australia's two great novels of the colonial period and undoubtedly the best Irish novel to come out of Australia. Clarke's His Natural Life is a Victorian English novel while Such is Life is Irish and modern - in the way that Tristram Shandy is: discursive, discontinuous and playful with both language and the reader.

Manchuria colonisation.
[Manshu Iju Hyakumon Hyakuto].
Manchuria Nichinichi Shimbun 1937. 19x13cm publisher's illustrated wrapper (a bit used); 138pp, some photo illustations and diagrams.
¶ Everything a poor Japanese farmer needed to know about resettling in Manchuria in 100 questions and 100 answers, published by the Manchuria daily news. This was the Manchuria Million Houses Plan, created in 1936 and put into action in 1937, which was to see a million households of poor farmers resettled in northern Manchuria over the next twenty years. It seems that of the almost quarter of a million settlers abandoned there when the Soviets invaded at the end of the war about half made it back to Japan. Worldcat finds no copies, neither does NDL, and CiNii finds a scant handful in University libraries.

Report on the Lighting, Heating, and Ventilation of School Buildings in Great Britain, the continent of Europe, and America ...
Sydney, Govt Printer 1880. Foolscap folio, extracted from a binding; [8],264pp, numerous plans, elevations, diagrams (four folding).
¶ There is a literature of architecture in c19th Australia but not much of it and none of it is easy to find. Following much technical detail there are reports on particular schools in Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Philadelphia ... correspondence on the formation of a Technological Museum in Sydney with reports from the South Kensington Museum, the Imperial Technical School of Moscow ... We finish with Appendix Z: plans and specifications of four schools for between 70 and 200 children.

Superhero tulip comic.
Bulb Magic!
NY, Custom Comics for the Associated Bulb Growers of Holland [1956]. 19x13cm publisher's colour illustrated wrapper; 16pp; comic strip in colour.
¶ Forget Captain America and Superman. What did they ever do for the American suburb? We lose little time in exposition: on page one Tom and Bob meet on the homeward bound 5.04 and Bob is flummoxed to find Tom has sold his house at asking price while he, Bob, hasn't had a nibble for his, the same model. Not entirely the same, Tom explains, his bulb plantings "sure did increase the value!" So we learn how bulbs produced a colorful miracle for Tom and can do the same for us. Did Batman ever increase your property value? Worldcat finds two copies but one of those can't be verified.

Catalogue - watches. Yoshida Watch Company.
Fancy Smart ... Yoshida Watch Company [from the cover].
[Tokyo? 193-?]. 15x22cm publisher's illustrated wrapper; 18pp, illustrated throughout. Pencil inscription on the front, staples disintegrated but rather good with a couple of special offer inserts and a four page illustrated clock leaflet dated 1929 inserted.
¶ There were two Yoshida watch companies in Tokyo at this time. One, founded in 1920, still exists as a high class salon in Shibuya, and the other, which began as a wholesaler in 1901 started manufacturing watches in the 1930s. They morphed over the decades into Orient watches, a subsidiary of Seiko. This seems the more likely if we have to choose between the two. One inserted slip offers a 50% wholesale discount. Quite smart, a lot of deco, mostly for men with a few women's watches at the end. A couple of these seem very expensive: 370 yen against a man's watch for less than 20 yen.
