Kawabata Honami, [Shin'an Otogi Misemono Sugoroku].
Kawabata Honami
[Shin'an Otogi Misemono Sugoroku].
Tokyo, Yonen no Tomo 1916 (Taisho 5). Colour broadside 53x78cm. Edges nibbled, some browning and a couple of small flaws but pretty good.
¶ This utopian view of a kids' paradise was the New Year gift from the magazine Yonen no Tomo. It's hard to find. This is a model for a new kind of fun palace that has a lot in common with the modern department store, which usually had fun for kids and a cafe at the top. In this case all the boring stuff - like clothes - has been stripped out and the whole emporium turned over to fun.

HOPKINS, Francis R.C.
Souvenir of the Dramatic Works. Printed for private circulation only.
Sydney 1910. Large octavo publisher's red morocco (edges rubbed); [7],32pp, photo illustrations & facsimile playbills on various coloured papers. Some unnecessary annotations on the last couple of pages by an intermediate owner.
¶ Inscribed by Hopkins to A.B. Triggs. The synopsis and playbills for William Dampier's productions of Hopkins' plays from 'Good For Evil' (1876) to his yellow peril romp, 'Reaping the Whirlwind' - published in 1909 but despite the mock playbill here, never produced.

Enomoto Horeikan., [Gizoku Dokufu Den : Yoma no Joen?]
Enomoto Horeikan.
[Gizoku Dokufu Den : Yoma no Joen?]
Osaka, Enomoto Shoten 1927 (Taisho 16). 19x13cm publisher's colour illustrated wrapper; 350,[2]pp, illustrated title and frontispiece. Browning of the cheap paper and a hint of staining of the bottom edge at the beginning. Pretty good for such a disposable book.
¶ A charming and substantial example of Dokufu - poisonous women - literature. The title sort of translates as Life Story of a Dokufu Robber : Demon's Passion. Put that together with the cover and no more needs to be said. Especially as this is a cheap pulp once you get inside. From what I can glean Enomoto Horeikan is a series from Enomoto Matsunosuke who produced cheap pulp like this that, along with akahon (red books - luridly printed cheap kid's books), manga and suchlike, by-passed the usual distribution chains and were sold directly at railway stations, festivals and stalls. I can't find a record of this anywhere.

HORNUNG, E.W. [Ernest William]., Irralie's Bushranger. A story of Australian adventure.
HORNUNG, E.W. [Ernest William].
Irralie's Bushranger. A story of Australian adventure.
NY, Scribner's 1896. Narrow octavo publisher's pale cloth elaborately blocked in dark green. A bit smudged, a couple of blotches near the end, a quite decent copy.
¶ First American edition, contemporaneous with the English; part of the Ivory Series while the London edition was one of the New Vagabond Series. Here we meet Stingaree, the apparently well-bred bushranger, who reappears in later Horning stories. In this near farce of mistaken identity Stingaree makes the mistake of moving too far south of his usual patch, to the Riverina station of the dauntless, blue-eyed, young Irralie.

Mr. Justice Raffles.
NY, Scribner's 1909. Octavo publisher's illustrated cloth blocked in black and orange. A rather good, bright copy
¶ First American edition published at pretty much the same time as the London edition. Raffles' last innings. Not knowing this at the time, much was made of this being the first Raffles novel, as opposed to collection of stories.

Stingaree.
NY, Scribners 1905. Octavo publishers green cloth with a mounted illustration on the front; eight plates by George Lambert. A rather good copy.
¶ First American edition or first edition? April according to the copyright page and the reviews and advertisements. Did the English edition beat it into print? It seems unlikely - May 15 is the publisher's announcement I found. One of Hornung's relatively few proper Australian thrillers.

Hotels.
The Stevens. The World's Greatest Hotel. Chicago.
Chicago, the company [1927]. Quarto publisher's printed wrapper; 32pp, profusely illustrated.
¶ A celebratory promotion marking the opening of this massive and opulent pile. Built at a cost of over thirty million dollars, as proclaimed in the first sentence, the building still exists but the Stevens family went up in smoke wihin five years. By 1932 the hotel was bankrupt and the trio of father and two sons were soon after indicted for financial corruption. The father had a permanently crippling stroke, the elder son blew his brains out and the younger went to prison.

HOWARD, Thomas., On the Loss of the Teeth; and on the best means of restoring them.
HOWARD, Thomas.
On the Loss of the Teeth; and on the best means of restoring them.
London, Simpkin & Marshall 1859. Small slender octavo publisher's blindstamped cloth; 62,[1]pp and a charming frontispiece printed in blue with a before and after overlay. An over possessive medico's bookplate and blindstamp on the front endpapers, rather a good copy.
¶ A successful little book it seems, there were several printings between 1852 and 1862 (the publishers claim 27 by 1857). Howard, surgeon dentist to the Archbishop of Canterbury, at first seems to approve of artificial teeth made of hippo tusk but later points out that they don't last long. There are similar problems with ivory, gold and natural teeth (recycled from other mouths) which understandably disturb persons of "extreme sensibility and delicacy of feeling". He has, though, invented a "new description of composition teeth" which are "perfectly incorruptible" - their "durability is unbounded". By 1863 Howard had moved from Hanover Square to Fleet Street and extended his hours from 11 till 4 to 10 till 5. Whether this means a thriving business or desperate decline I can't tell.

HOWE, E.W.
The Mystery of the Locks.
Boston, Osgood 1885. Octavo publisher's decorated brown cloth blocked in black and gilt. A small, almost tiny, snag at the top of the spine, a rather good, bright copy.
¶ First (only?) edition. A fine array of gothic chapter headings if nothing else: The Town of Dark Nights; The Face at the Window; Pictures in the Fire; The Locks' Ghost; The Whispers in the Air; The Ancient Maiden; A Shot at the Shadow; The Step on the Stair; The Pursuing Shadow; ... and finally The Going Down of the Sun.

HOYLAND, John.
A Historical Survey of the Customs, Habits, & Present State of the Gypsies; designed to develope the origin of this singular people, and to promote the amelioration of their condition.
York, printed for the author by Wm. Alexander 1816. Octavo 19th century half gilt calf (a little rubbed); 266,[2 publisher's list]pp. Some light browning, most obvious on the title page, but a rather good, quite handsome copy.
¶ First edition; only edition really, leaving out modern reprints and facsimiles. Notable for being the first serious book on, and the first sympathetic defence, however misguided, of the English Gypsies. And notable for the insubstantial stories about Hoyland himself, his supposed fall from Quaker grace and dalliance with Gypsy maidens.

HUBBARD, John Gellibrand.
The Currency and the Country.
London, Longman &c 1843. Octavo disbound; iii-viii,112pp and folding table. Without half title, stitching gone but still a fresh copy.
¶ A notable salvo in the currency war at the time, in support of the 'single bank of issue' and consequently that any profit belongs to the nation. Marx called on this to demolish James Mill's "false theory of price" in his 'Elements of Political Economy' and to establish other points in Kapital. I wonder what Hubbard might have thought about this. Hubbard - later Lord Addington - did, after all, become governor of the Bank of England and a conservative politician.
