 Hikifuda., Specimen hikifuda.
Hikifuda.
Specimen hikifuda.
n.p. [192-?]. Colour lithograph 26x38cm. A bit creased, stab holes on the right indicating it was once in an album. A printed code number on the back.
¶ A glamorous pair of Taisho women doing what urban Japanese did best: throng the busy exciting streets and shop. These hikifuda - handbills or small advertising posters - were often produced with blank frames for customers to have their own wares and business details printed over. I'd guess this was aimed at the fashion industry.

¶ The vivid and exciting world of groceries beautifully depicted. These hikifuda - handbills or small advertising posters - were often produced with blank frames for customers to have their own wares and business details printed over.

 Hikifuda., [Takahashiya ... Taromaru ...].
Hikifuda.
[Takahashiya ... Taromaru ...].
n.p. [c1910?]. 26x38cm colour woodcut. Margins browned.
¶ I don't know what Takahashiya sold, I'm sorry, but I can tell you that Taromaru is in Toyama and that this patriotic hikifuda celebrates the royal family who in turn celebrate Japan taking to the air. That's the crown prince, soon to be emperor Taisho and some family: wife and presumably his oldest child, Hirohito. These hikifuda - small posters or handbills - were usually produced with the text panel blank. The customer, usually a retailer, had their own details over printed, so the same image might sell fine silk or soy sauce.

Hikifuda.
[Wata Neru Zakka-Sho].
1906 (Meiji 39). Colour lithograph 38x26cm.
¶ I'm sure this insufferable couple are appalled to find they are advertising cotton, nails and general merchandise. I suspect that picture behind them is the view through their stateroom window. They must have thought they would showcase luxury travel and travel goods. Hikifuda - small posters or handbills - were usually produced with the text panel blank. The customer, usually a retailer, had their own details over printed, so the same image might sell fine silk or soy sauce.

Hikifuda.
[Wayo Sake Kakushu ... Amari Eitaro Shoten].
n.p. [c1930?]. Colour lithograph 26x38cm. Quite good.
¶ These blooming infants are scampering into battle for Japanese and foreign liquors. These hikifuda - small posters or handbills - were often produced with a blank text panel and the customer, usually a retailer, had their own details over printed. The patriotic youngsters may well advertise something more suitable on other examples.

 Hikifuda., [Yamaishihara ...]
Hikifuda.
[Yamaishihara ...]
Osaka 1891 (Meiji 24). Colour woodcut 38x26cm. Two horizontal folds, a nice copy.
¶ An example of a somewhat western aesthetic style (ie inspired by Japan) applied to the authoritive detail of a currency note or share certificate. In other words, here is a company or product to be trusted. Absolutely. Hikifuda - small posters or handbills - were usually produced with the text panel blank. The customer, usually a retailer, had their own details over printed, so the same image might sell fine silk or soy sauce. Yamaishihara is an area south west of Osaka and the timetable is for 1892. The rest is up to you.

Specimen Hikifuda.
[Yorozu to Kanbutsu Sato Sekiyu ...]
n.p. [c1900?]. Colour woodcut 26x38cm. Rumpled with a couple of small repairs to the edges; quite decent. Stab holes in the right margin showing it was once in an album.
¶ A bustling handsome print produced for merchants of imported goods. These hikifuda - small posters or handbills - were usually produced with the text panel blank. The customer had their own details over printed. In some cases, like this, samples were were produced with generic text to show the finished product.

 HILL, Frederick Trevor., The Accomplice.
HILL, Frederick Trevor.
The Accomplice.
New York, Harper 1905. Octavo, very good in publisher's illustrated cloth blocked in red and gilt.
¶ First edition, a thriller worked as a court room drama; described by Carolyn Wells (in her 'Technique of the Mystery Story'; 1913) as 'unusually good' despite her make an example of it for using a particularly implausible device for catching the criminal.

HILL, Headon.
The Embassy Case.
London, Ward Lock 1915. Octavo publisher's decorated cloth blocked in blind, red and gilt; frontispiece. A used but decent copy. This came from Otto Penzler's collection, he usually kept the best copy he could find and sold any lesser copies.
¶ First edition. A common enough story: a young well bred woman slaving in demeaning circumstances to help her ne-er-do-well brother running up gambling debts in India is accosted by a sinister prince of Balkannia who hires her to impersonate an as yet unidentified lady from his country. That brings us to the end of a brief chapter one. My guess is the king's daughter. From here on it gets complicated.

HILL, Headon.
Millions of Mischief. The story of a great secret.
Akron, Saalfield 1905. Octavo publishers decorated red cloth blocked in black and white (a bit blotched). Not bad. This came from Otto Penzler's collection, he usually kept the best copy he could find and sold any lesser copies.
¶ First published American edition? Hubin lists Transatlantic (1904) but I wonder what form that takes. The only thing by Transatlantic I can trace is an eleven page proof of another British thriller, presumably produced for copyright purposes. Hill's publisher proudly repeated this notice from The Stage in his other books: "Not even the late Guy Boothby imagined anything more magnificently preposterous than the motive of Mr. Headon Hill's 'Millions of Mischief'".

HILLCOAT, Captain C.H. [Charles Henry]., Ida Hall or a Mystery of the Suez Canal.
HILLCOAT, Captain C.H. [Charles Henry].
Ida Hall or a Mystery of the Suez Canal.
Glasgow, David Bryce [1896]. Narrow octavo publisher's red cloth (mild signs of use). A bit canted, pretty good.
¶ Only edition of this uncommon thriller which sees our young Miss Ida Hall of Berkley Square [sic] snatched by slavers from a Port Said hotel. Despite the thousand pound reward posted nothing has been known of her until this account. Fear not, she will be alive and well at the end of the book despite her terrible sufferings. This wasn't Captain Hillcoat's most successful book, his Notes on Stowage went through at least three editions. Now - at the risk of drawing too long a parochial bow - can we claim some place for this in Australian literature? Captain Hillcoat (Charles Henry Lorenzo Westernra Hillcoat in full) was of a clan of emigres. His immediate family, after time in India, emigrated to America when he was a child while at least one uncle headed for Australia. His sister Cecilia joined the Australian rush in 1866 so the place was soon packed with cousins, nieces and nephews. He certainly sailed Australian waters, as the captain of the Anglo Indian in the eighties and as captain of the Futami Maru in the late nineties. His wife died in Townsville during a voyage, in 1883, and he himself died in Gosford, NSW, in 1902.
