, A Vous de Juger (Picasso Portraits of Stalin)
A Vous de Juger (Picasso Portraits of Stalin)
Paris, PAIX et LIBERTE, 167 Rue De Universite, Paris, 1953. Softcover. Folded sheet, printed in black and red ink. (roughly translates to: It is up to you to judge. The Communist Party has ordered Pablo Picasso to produce a portrait of Stalin according to the style of socialist realism. Having had the chance to obtain some studies which seem to be able to be attributed to the Master, we submit them to the public so that it becomes aware of the state of the artist and his efforts up to the Supreme art." No date is on this pamphlet, but surely quite rare. As found on the web under the search terms Stalin Picasso Liberte : This cartoon is a satire on the portrait of Stalin painted by Pablo Picasso. It was NOT actually painted or drawn by Picasso, but is related to his portrait of Stalin, completed for the tribute issue of a magazine further described by Joel Kotek as follows: "..On 12 March, at the request of its editor, Louis Aragon, Les Lettres françaises, the Communist cultural weekly published a tribute by Picasso to the great Stalin. The departed autocrat was portrayed in youthsome tones, fresh and rosy. Initially, Aragon was relieved. Picasso could have, but did not, portray Stalin as a hero, and as the heroic mode requires, as a nude on a cloud. Nevertheless, Picasso's tribute was considered a scandal. Protests poured in, immediately and spontaneously. "a horrible drawing," "an indecent caricature," "appalling," "ridiculous," disrespectful," "outrageous," a hideous portrait," were some of the reactions. Picasso and Aragon had committed a sacrilege by representing him other than as a reassuring elderly man, eternal father of his peoples, in short, in a way which did not correspond to the canons of socialist realism. VG-, some ink or blood on rear sheet, a small amount of loss from printed border .

, Wood-Engravings Being a Selection of Eric Gill's Engravings on Wood. No. 5 (Virgin and Child) Is a Wood Cut, Cut with a Knife on the Long Grain of the Wood Instead of with a Graver on the 'End' Grain
Wood-Engravings Being a Selection of Eric Gill's Engravings on Wood. No. 5 (Virgin and Child) Is a Wood Cut, Cut with a Knife on the Long Grain of the Wood Instead of with a Graver on the 'End' Grain
New York, E. Weyhe, 1924. No. 100 of 100 numbered copies (of a total run of 150 copies). Cloth. Linen oatmeal colored cloth with Brown-paper thick stock dustjacket. 36 leaves of hand-made paper including the half-title. 34 illustrations or woodcuts within the printed portion of the book, and an additional small (and pencil-signed) print of Madonna and Child pasted onto the title-page, over top of a red inked printed cross found on the English edition of this title. This image is different than image No. 5. and it is not referenced in the Contents. Limitation statement following the title-page states: "One hundred and fifty copies of this edition have been printed of which one hundred are numbered and offered for sale at 17$. 50c. This copy is no. 100." The English printing of this book has a slightly different title, as follows: " Wood-engravings being a selection of Eric Gill's engravings on wood. The first (Virgin and child) is a wood cut, that is cut with a knife on the long grain of the wood instead of with a graver on the "end" grain." [This was cut for a poster]." As such, it is unclear to me if the Weyhe edition was 150 copies, or if there were 150 copies combined of both printings. The English printing appears to lack the pasted-on image found on this copy of the Weyhe printing. Additionally, the English printing is much more widely held (41 copies) in public and institutional libraries, than is the Weyhe printing (9 copies) according to Worldcat. No other copies encountered mention the pasted-on signed image on the title-page. VG, few light smudges and the dustjacket is soiled but crisp and undamaged at the extremities with minor exceptions .
