Atkinson, Thomas
Miscellanies in Prose and Verse. Now First Collected and Arranged in Three Volumes
London, Longman, Rees, Orme, Browne, Green and Longman, 1833. First Edition. Hard Cover. Believed first edition. One of a stated 175 copies. THIS IS VOLUME THREE only. Atkinson, a Scottish writer and bookseller in Glasgow, born around 1800 garnered some accolades for his work, notably from Sir Walter Scott, and was an active traveler and speaker. He died in 1833, contracting an illness, most likely the result of exertions from his last travel. This volume contains many pieces of poetry, as well as some minstrel style pieces which are set to music. (The music is also printed within). Of note in this regard are several pieces giving the composer to be J.P. Clarke, possibly the noted Canadian musician and composer known for his work in religious music and music teachings in Canada. Clarke, originally from Edinburgh emigrated to Canada in 1834. Other than the bit of research I did, I have no proof that this is the same man but it does seem to fit well. Another piece of music gives John Thomson as composer, who could be the noted Scottish composer, a contemporary of Mendelssohn. Also in this volume is a history of the First Crusade, a lengthy commentary on the consequences of the Holy Wars in Palestine, and several small anecdotes on some of his travels. This book is in GOOD condition. Previous owner's personal library sticker at the foot of the spine. Moderate scuffing to the covers. Light soiling. Uneven light darkening. Moderate edgewear with corners bumped and frayed, spine pulled and frayed with some loss to top and bottom of the backstrip, and some light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Spine faded. Inner text clean and tight with some sporadic but light foxing, with some heavier foxing to the blank pages that precede the pieces of music. Previous owner's bookplate on inside front cover. Nice copy of this very scarce work in GOOD condition. Good/No Jacket.

Act of Agreement Broadside. Maritime Document
No Place, No Publisher, 1853. Unbound. Act of Agreement broadside. Single sheet, printed on both sides. Appears dated 1853. Measures roughly 22 by 19 ¾ inches. An agreement between the master and seamen of the ship Meridian, captained by John Manson. With twenty-eight handwritten names of the various crewmembers. Some appear to be in their own hand, although most appear written in the same hand with "his 'x' mark" written in between the first and last names, presumably the marks of those who could not sign their own names. This also provides their stations on board, as well as monthly wages and advance wages paid. Nine crewmembers apparently deserted in Liverpool, England (deserted LP written next to their names) with three others perhaps deserting before setting sail. The Meridian was to leave Boston in July of 1853 and head to St. John, New Brunswick before sailing to Liverpool. Manson captained Meridian from 1851-54 and was from the South Shore area of Massachusetts, perhaps of the Barque Hill community. The ship Meridian built by Jackson and Ewell of East Boston and at 1740 tons was perhaps largest ship then afloat (see the Barque Hill Association website). The agreement outlines the terms to which the Master and seaman agree to work on the boat, including wages, etc. The reverse of this broadside bears 'An act for the Government and Regulation of Seamen in the Merchants Service' originally passed in 1790. Also included below this act is another act 'In Addition to several acts regulating the shipment and discharge of Seamen,' approved on 1840. This side bears a bald eagle emblem at the top center. In GOOD condition. Several horizontal and vertical fold creases present, with five small holes present along the intersection of the center horizontal and vertical fold creases. Several chips and tears present along the extremities, with minor loss. Minor browning to the paper, a bit heavier along the extremities. A few areas with minor foxing, with heavier foxing/browning/staining to the side bearing the printing of the act. Several small ink stains present. Good .
