While living in Alton, Illinois, Long was placed in charge of the militia troops assigned to protect abolitionist martyr and newspaper publisher Elijah Lovejoy, who was shot dead by an angry mob in 1837; he was the brother of explorer Stephen H. Long (1784-1864). .
