Two Volumes in One (the volumes appeared monthly and this is the volume for November & December of the second year) 103x64mm tan roan spined boards with red gilt titling label tips vellum covered (hinges cracked head of spine chipped edges & corners worn but covers secure) 144pp + 144pp (incl. subscriber list). Lacks half title but with bookplate of Louie de Vere Loder (later The Hon. Mrs. Grey with note saying this is my Grandmother Louise Beauclerk). The 2nd volume half title explains that this appears by subscription and will be published on the same day in France and London. Translated into English in 1786.

Two Volumes in One cloth with black spine label gilt titled (binding worn especially to edges/corners but holding entirely firm) viii +[9]-214pp +214pp. Coat of arms bookplate George Jacob Bosanquet of Broxbournbury [1791-1866] with name of his wife, formerly Mrs. Gaussen [widow of S. R. Gaussen of Brookmans Park] on blank side of second volume frontis. Last leaf has 1cm ink spot which shows through to previous page and to opposite page of index. It makes the word "fille" hard to read else all is legible.

In teaching them about Christ the governess brings the children to love her. Meanwhile she has rejected the young doctor who scoffs at religion, inherits money from an Uncle, founds a misson for orphans and marries her now converted doctor. And all are leading the life they belief the Lord meant them to pursue. Victorian morality leads to happiness, and wealth.

Quarto, Volumes I and II of III, several maps with colour (including a fine one of Indian subcontinent); tissue guard on frontis; 10" tall; heavy wear to edges and spine. Decolouration on covers of both volumes, particular wear to edges of Vol I. Pagination excellent in both volumes however, despite some minor wear to edges. *Vol I and II chart the history of India from the first landings by European Merchants to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Vol I ends with Clive of India's conquest of the subcontinent. Henry Beveridge was a prominent Scottish Calvinist who made a career translating the works of Calvin, he published this history of India without ever visiting. His son however was a notable figure in the Indian Civil Service, and his grandson was the prominent Liberal MP William Beveridge.
