[Captain James Cook] Hawkesworth, John LL.D. / Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by Order of His Present Majesty for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere
[Captain James Cook] Hawkesworth, John LL.D. / Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook
An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by Order of His Present Majesty for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere
London, W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773. 1st edition. Hardcover. 4to. This is the first printing, first state, of the famous account of what is now described as 'Cook's First Voyage', although primary credit for the creation of this account is given to John Hawkesworth (who had been commissioned by the Admiralty to edit Capt. Cook's papers). Note: there was a second edition published in the same year, containing a Preface by Hawkesworth (Beddie 650). Volume I of our offering ends at page 676, and shows page 139 as numbered 139-360 (as called for in Beddie 648). It contains 18 of the 21 charts and plates called for in this volume, lacking two charts and one plate (or 'cut' as it is called). Volume II has a large tide mark across the top of the first third, or so, of the contents. Page 189 is misnumbered 191. Old worm hole to margins of pages 119-161. Contains 16 of 22 charts and plates (five folding charts, seven folding plates, and four single page plates). The text is complete in 410 numbered pages. Volume III text commences at page 411 and concludes at page 795. All nine plates and charts are present, including the very large folding chart of New Zealand (Cook was the first to confirm that New Zealand was, in fact, an island). Lack of nine plates/ charts. The text shows foxing, severe on a few pages but, on the whole, the text is perfectly readable and, if professionally restored, the plates and charts would be magnificent. Ill.: charts and engravings.

He made many journeys into uncharted areas, particularly in the Himilayas (1893-1898), the Gobi Desert, and Tibet. This title records his impressions while on a journey to make astronomical measurements during the Anglo-Russian boundary dispute of 1893-1894. Cook, Captain James [Vols. I and II] / Captain James King [Vol. III] / [Vol. IV - plate volume], A Voyage of Discovery to the Pacific Ocean
Cook, Captain James [Vols. I and II] / Captain James King [Vol. III] / [Vol. IV - plate volume]
A Voyage of Discovery to the Pacific Ocean
London, W. and A. Strahan, 1784. 1st edition. Hardcover. 4to. Complete four volume set of the first edition. In the original boards, but boards detached. Overall, the contents remain tightly-bound and in remarkably good condition. Vol. I complete but for The List of Plates (pp. xci to xcvi - however, included in the fourth volume - see below), and all seven maps on six plates (four folding), and one folding plate, are present. Vol. II complete with all eleven maps or views (six folding). Vol. III shows an early worm hole to the first few pages, not affecting text. All six maps and plates are present (two folding), plus the folding table at the end, but with no advertising leaf included. Vol IV contains 61 engravings of people, places, and animals visited by Capt. Cook in what is now Hawaii (described as the Sandwich Islands), Western British Columbia, and Alaska. Forty of the plates are folding; 21 are large single-page plates. The volume begins with 'The List of Plates', and is numbered pages xci to xcvi (see above). Some of the illustrations are foxed. This volume lacks three charts (nos. I and VI from vol. I, and no. XXXVI from vol. II). There is foxing (off-setting, really) on the pages facing the plates and charts, and occasional marginal foxing to the text, but the latter is hardly untoward. Beddie, Bibliography of Captain James Cook (BCJC) 1543, Streeter 3478. Sabin 16250, Howes 729a, Sotheby's London sale 11/21/91 lot #377 (three vols only). Ill.: charts, engravings.
