Oxberry, William Henry.
Oxberry's Dramatic Chronology, Containing the Names, Dates of Births, First Appearances and Deaths, of Most of the Principal London Actors and Actresses, Up to 1849.
London: Published for the collector by Mr. Harris, [1850]. [1850]. - Sextodecimo, 6-7/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Original printed tan wrappers bound into modern red cloth with a printed title label on the spine and new endpapers. 43 & [1] pages plus the original cream endpaper and several blank leaves bound in at the front and with a substantial quantity of blank leaves at the rear. The title page is darkened and chipped along the edges. There is some soiling and staining throughout. Good. First edition. SCARCE. Although announced as an annual, this was the only volume published. From the library of William Winter, signed by him on the title page and also on the original endpaper bound in at the front. Winter has made notes and markings in pencil on a number of entries. William Winter [1836-1917 was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He moved to New York City in 1859 and began his career as literary critic of the Saturday Press, then of the New York Albion [1861-65]. For the following forty years [1865-1909] he was drama critic of the New York Tribune. Brooks Atkinson, in his history of American theatre, deemed Winter an intolerable prude for denouncing modern dramatists such as Ibsen and Shaw and foreign stars like Sarah Bernhardt and Eleanor Duse for their personal lives. He credited Winter, however, with his remarkable memory which enabled him to leave vivid descriptions of the work of Edwin Booth, Henry Irving and others; and for his sometimes discriminating reviews of highly popular dramas [he regarded "East Lynne" as a piece of claptrap]. William Henry Oxberry (1808-1852), was the son of the actor William Oxberry. He was himself an actor and made his first professional appearance at the Olympic in 1825 as Sam Swipes in "Exchange No Robbery". He appeared principally in burlesque and had a reputation as a comic dancer. In addition to acting, Oxberry was a voluminous playwright. Good .
