Hieronymus Ammon Imitatio Crameriana (Nuremberg 1649),
Turnhout, Brepols, 1999 Hardback, 130 p., 160 x 235 mm. ISBN 9782503507804.
¶ This book is an edition of Hieronymus Ammon's Imitatio Crameriana, which is a compilation of forty heart emblems in imitation of Daniel Cramer's Emblemata Sacra, and in the context of contemporary Nuremberg as a thriving centre of culture important as a theory of learning and translation. In 1649 Hieronymus Ammon, a town lawyer in Nuremberg, published a sophisticated bilingual emblem book in Latin and German under the title Imitatio Crameriana. The book is a compilation of forty heart emblems, imitations of Daniel Cramer's Emblemata Sacra. At this time Nuremberg was a centre of economic and political power, and boasted a thriving culture. The town's poets had a serious interest in rhetoric and poetics, and they showed an appreciation for the vernacular culture that was being promoted by the Sprachgesellschafften. In this context the notion of imitatio is important as a theory of learning and translation. Imitating classical patterns was considered a means to develop style through independent variation. Cramer's heart emblems were considered by Ammon and his friends as an ideal model. Even more so because they adhered to orthodox protestant dogma. Thus these emblems fulfilled the expectations of erudition and wit, while satisfying protestant principles of scripture. Most of the biblical mottoes were texts used for daily sermons in the Lutheran church. The substantial introduction is followed by a list of Ammon's Latin mottoes which are juxtaposed with their source mottoes in Cramer's emblems and accompanied by English translations; there is also a second list of the key motifs in the emblem pictures. Studies on Medieval Empathies,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. X+380 p., 11 b/w ill. + 6 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503530314.
¶ Empathy is a deep feeling or intuition for kinship transcending self-preoccupied individuality. This book is about empathy in the Middle Ages, before it had a name. The authors begin by tracing the origins of empathy in pre-Christian Antiquity and early Christianity, especially in mysteries of divine justice, by which the good often suffered and the wicked prospered and, as with surgical healing, compassion was manifested by inflicting pain. The authors also explore many facets of empathy's development in the Latin West, criss-crossing the artificial borders of academic departments to reveal interlocking connections that give emotional power to images, whether verbal, pictorial, or performative. In a powerful multi-disciplinary collaboration, they identify conditions and limits of empathy, and areas in which the dynamic between insiders and outsiders forced subversive explorations of what it meant to be human. The doctrine of Christ as mediator of divine love dominated medieval thought about empathy as a human instinct. Taken together, like magnetic poles, two pictures in this book represent that mediation in action. The cover illustration, a mid-ninth-century ivory plaque from Carolingian Gaul, depicts Christ, the Divine Word, Love incarnate, glorified, enthroned, and adored by angels as creator, judge, and teacher. The second, Plate 1, from the same period and region, represents the act that sealed the mediation of divine love to humanity: Christ the man, tortured and dying from love.Languages : English, Latin.

Performance of Christian and Pagan Storyworlds Non-Canonical Chapters of the History of Nordic Medieval Literature,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, approx. 400 p., 20 b/w ill., 6 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503542362.
¶ The present collection explores a hitherto understudied body of Nordic medieval literature which, although overlooked in traditional, language-based narratives, was in fact crucial in shaping social and religious identities. By drawing on the ?performance turn? in cultural studies, the volume identifies a number of minor and peripheral literary forms and texts that had a vital connection to ritual and ritualized speech. These neglected traditions therefore offer an alternative insight into Nordic literary life and the sets of cultural expression, or storyworlds, underlying Nordic culture. The collected studies explore different aspects of verbal performances as a primary vehicle for the Nordic storyworlds, with a preference for the Christian over the pagan traditions. Emphasis is placed on Latin, Old Norse, and Finnish traditions that were retold and reproduced over time. These ?living? literary forms highlight the importance of non-canonical texts for the interpretation of contact between the peripheries and centres of Nordic culture. Through the focus on the interaction between Latin and the vernacular, between eastern Baltic and western Latin influences, and between ritual and speech in religious practice, this collection demonstrates the importance of ?minor? texts for the re-construction of medieval Nordic culture and history. Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, X+262 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503517780.
¶ The essays within this volume unite study of the medieval household with that of women's religious practices, providing a new avenue of enquiry the history of the church. Both as God's house and as the dwellings of his monastic and other followers, the history of the church is in part that of an institution conceived as a household. In recent years, secular life and lifestyles in late antiquity and the Middle Ages have been illuminated through renewed attention to the economic and social history of households, while scholarship on women has produced studies of the lives and the devotional reading of laywomen and women religious. This volume is a pioneering collection that unites study of the household with women's religious practices as a focus of enquiry. It moves beyond consideration of the church's roles in women's history to the impact of women's householding on the history of the church. Languages : English.

Living Saints of the Thirteenth Century The Lives of Yvette, Anchoress of Huy; Juliana of Cornillon, Author of the Corpus Christi Feast; and Margaret the Lame, Anchoress of Magdeburg,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, IX+416 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503520773.
¶ This volume presents translations, with accompanying introductions, of the Lives of three thirteenth-century figures: Yvette of Huy, Margaret the Lame of Magdeburg, and the anchoress Juliana of Cornillon. This volume presents the Lives of three women of the thirteenth century, all written by contemporaries. In the late Middle Ages, almost every town in Northern Europe had its own anchoress, who would keep in touch with the citizens through a window looking onto the churchyard or through a door and window looking into the church (as shown in the cover illustration). Such women, along with the beguines, Cistercian nuns and monks, reform-minded clergy, and devout laywomen, formed what Barbara Newman has termed 'close-knit networks of spiritual friendship that easily crossed the boundaries of gender, religious status, and even language'. This volume presents the lives of two recluses, Yvette of Huy, whose life was recorded by her spiritual friend, the Premonstratensian Hugh of Floreffe, and Margaret the Lame of Magdeburg, whose lessons were recorded by her confessor, the Dominican John of Magdeburg (introduced and translated by Jo Ann McNamara, and Gertrud Jaron Lewis and Tilman Lewis respectively). The anchoress Eve of Saint-Martin was an author herself. Her memoir in French on her friend Juliana's and her own labour for the new Feast of Corpus Christi forms the basis of the Latin Life of Juliana of Cornillon (introduced and translated by Barbara Newman). Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XII+260 p., 1 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503517032.
¶ This volume contains translatiuons of all of the relevant medieval sources on Mary of Oignies (1177-1213), was one of the first holy women to transform religious life in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Mary of Oignies (1177-1213) was one of the first holy women to transform religious life in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Living as a beguine and a free anchoress she guided those who came to speak with her, both high clerics and common people alike. In the oral world of medieval Christianity one disregarded her word at considerable risk. This volume contains all of the relevant medieval sources on Mary of Oignies, translated by Margot King and Hugh Feiss OSB. They include: the Life written by her confessor, James of Vitry, and the Supplement thereof by Thomas of Cantimpre; the liturgical office of her feast-day; and the 'History of the Priory of Oignies'. Also included are an introductory essay about her life and significance, written by Anneke Mulder-Bakker; a study about Mary as a 'friend to the saints' by Brenda Bolton; and the manuscript transmission of her Life, by Suzan Folkerts. The volume therefore provides a comprehensive 'companion' to Mary of Oignies and her wider significance in medieval and modern scholarship. Languages : English.

¶ The studies within this volume apply insights gained from gender studies to re-consider the way knowledge and learning was transmitted in medieval Europe 1200-1550. Traditional scholarship has largely concentrated on the clerical and academic context of conventional learning. It tended to focus on the contents and methods of formal education, as well as on a small group of educational institutions from which women were excluded. In this volume, authors consider how learning was transmitted outside the schools, in particular within women's communities. They raise a range of questions: how was knowledge transmitted in an oral context, what varieties of knowledge were available to communities of women? What kinds of learning are characteristic of such communities? What techniques did women develop to preserve and transmit their knowledge and how was it valorized both within their communities, and by 'authoritative' outsiders? Under what circumstances could women themselves gain authority in passing on knowledge to a wider audience? Languages : English.

Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, X+308 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527567.
¶ Marcia Colish is one of the most influential scholars of the history of medieval and early modern thought, the author of numerous books and scores of articles in the field, as well as a pioneering President of the Medieval Academy of America. This volume honours her accomplishments with papers by her many colleagues, friends, and former students, who are themselves prominent scholars from across a range of disciplines. The chapters are diverse chronologically and topically, yet they are all stimulated by themes that Prof. Colish has explored during her long and distinguished career. They address the richness of European intellectual history between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, treating the multiple heritages of philosophy, theology, political theory, historiography, classical reception, and many other subjects to which her scholarship extends. The volume demonstrates the power of ideas in the development of European history generally, revealing that the careful study of the works of the 'mind' does indeed 'matter'. Languages : English.

Thomas of Cantimpre: The Collected Saints' Lives Abbot John of Cantimpre, Christina the Astonishing, Margaret of Ypres, and Lutgard of Aywieres,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Hardback, X+324 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503520780.
¶ This volume contains tranlations of four lively and eventful lives recorded by the Dominican hagiographer Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270). The Dominican Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270) was a key figure in the 'evangelical awakening' of the thirteenth century. A prolific hagiographer, he lauded such diverse subjects as the abbot and apostolic preacher John of Cantimpre; the teenage saint Margaret of Ypres, an urban recluse who died at 21; Lutgard of Aywieres, a Cistercian nun and mystic; and the theatrical, mentally troubled Christina 'the Astonishing' of St-Trond. Thomas had few peers in portraying the ritual theatre of penance. He gives us such memorable scenes as a naked moneylender led out of a pit by a rope, a formerly rapacious prince kissing his peasants? feet as he restores their stolen goods, St Christina leaping into fires and boiling cauldrons to save souls in purgatory, and the deceased Pope Innocent III in agony, begging St Lutgard for her prayers. In this volume readers will find all four lively and eventful lives between the same covers for the first time. The Life of Abbot John of Cantimpre has been newly translated by Barbara Newman, who has also supplied a new introduction. The other three Lives are reprinted from Margot H. King's Peregrina Translations Series. Languages : English, Latin.

Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 480 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503604947.
