Le present tome 4 est edite par Klaus Sallmann. La version francaise a ete realisee par des universitaires francais, sous la direction de Francois Heim. Il est consacre a l'age de la transition de la litterature romaine a la litterature chretienne au IIe et IIIe s. apres J.-C. Rome reste encore la capitale et la metropole culturelles, mais deja se fait sentir a nouveau, dans le cadre du bilinguisme, l'influence de la langue et de la litterature grecques. Des developpements litteraire et religieux particuliers s'esquissent ici et la dans l'empire, en particulier en Afrique. A cote de la litterature technique des grammairiens et des antiquaires, on trouve les textes juridiques classiques (Paulus par ex. et Ulpien) qui seront determinants pour la suite. However, the nature and status of the visual media, as well as the ways in which these were received, experienced, and appropriated, underwent several major changes between the twelfth and the seventeenth centuries. Contemporary sources describe and define the experience of reading texts and images as involving a mixture of visual and aural impulses that address both the inner eye and the outer senses. This volume sets out explicitly to investigate the specific, sensuous nature of this experience. This collection of essays and translations brings together two closely related works by an important but little studied late eleventh-century author, Goscelin of Saint-Bertin. His Liber confortatorius (the earliest work of spiritual instruction for a female recluse known to have been written in England) is addressed to Eve. Goscelin, who may have been a chaplain at Wilton, had been Eve's spiritual mentor since her childhood. Eve, however, left Wilton in her early twenties to become a recluse in Angers without even informing him of her plans, and in the Liber confortatorius, written in the form of an extended letter (c. 1082), Goscelin attempts to reassert and reconfigure their former close relationship. His account of the life and translation of St Edith, who was a member of the Wilton community until her death (in c. 986) at the age of twenty-three, was commissioned by the Wilton nuns and based on their oral report. Completed in c. 1080, the Legend gives a portrait of Edith and her mother Abbess Wulfthryth, and an account of the community's posthumous relationship with its saint up until the time that Goscelin began work on it. It is (with the exception of Goscelin's Life of Wulfhild of Barking) our only near contemporary narrative account of a late Anglo-Saxon women's community. The essays in this collection present a closely integrated account of some of the most central and striking aspects of the two texts. It was issued almost simultaneously in Latin and Dutch with the vices of speech, the second offers remedies for such defects. In a wide-ranging introduction Van Houdt discusses the cultural and literary context of the book and the issues it raises, setting it in the intellectual framework which shaped its pedagogical principles and ethical ideas. The catalogue of sins and remediescan be traced back to theological and humanistic sources, among which Erasmus'diatribe Lingua holds a special place.The appendix includes collated variants, an index of Latin mottoes with an English translation, a list of pictorial motifs, and an index of themes. ¶ In zijn in-memoriam in de Volkskrant prees Kees Fens de Tilburgse hoogleraar Hugo Verdaasdonk vooral als literatuurkenner, onder meer vanwege diens ?groot gevoel voor kwaliteit in de literatuur? en zijn ongeevenaarde ?belezenheid in de Nederlandse, de Europese en de Amerikaanse literatuur?. Zo werd Verdaasdonk geprezen om de grote lezer die hij ? inderdaad ? was. Maar in zijn wetenschappelijk onderzoek boog hij zich juist over de vraag op welke manier oordelen als ?kwaliteit in de literatuur? tot stand komen. Hugo Verdaasdonk werkte aan de afronding van Snijvlakken van de literatuurwetenschap toen hij in 2007 overleed, pas 62 jaar oud. Het manuscript was al in een vergevorderd stadium en wat hem voor ogen stond was duidelijk: een staalkaart geven van zijn ontwikkeling als empirisch literatuurwetenschapper. Verdaasdonk ziet het niet als taak van de literatuurwetenschap om alom al als waardevol erkende literaire werken te analyseren. Dat is in feite een vicieuze ? en zeker niet wetenschappelijke ? activiteit. De literatuurwetenschap dient uit te gaan van empirische vraagstellingen naar feitelijk analyseerbaar gedrag: van lezers, boekenkopers, literaire jury's enzovoort. Snijvlakken van de literatuurwetenschap volgt Verdaasdonks weg, die steeds haaks op de gangbare literatuurwetenschap stond: vanaf de baanbrekende artikelenreeks die hij midden jaren zeventig publiceerde in De Revisor (in bewerkte vorm het openingshoofdstuk van dit boek) tot aan zijn recente, opmerkelijke bevindingen rond de statistische kans van een auteur om een prestigieuze prijs als de AKO-prijs of P.C. Hooftprijs toegekend te krijgen.

¶ This volume contains the first critical edition of the latest of the three medieval French adaptations of the Song of Songs. There are three medieval French adaptations of the Song of Songs, each reflecting a distinct exegetical tradition. The latest of these three, here edited for the first time (from BNF fr. 14966), adopts the tropological interpretation according to which the Song depicts the relationship of the individual soul with God. The mystical, contemplative approach owes much to Bernard of Clairvaux, William of St Thierry, and Thomas the Cistercian, and this Cistercian tradition also has close links with the Beguines, a connection which receives detailed exploration in the editor's extensive Introduction. Writing in the late-thirteenth century in north-eastern France, the author of the Cantiques is aware of such an association and not only engages in the familiar procedures of allegorization, but, more originally, inserts into his commentary eight lyrics which are modelled on known secular chansons which receive full attention from the editor. Within the text, which covers Song 1. 1 to Song 3. 11 in 2544 octosyllables arranged in eight-line stanzas, speeches are assigned to Sponsus, Sponsa, Magister, and Religio. The Cantiques Salemon is the work of a poet rather than of a theologian, reflecting many elements associated with 'la courtoisie mystique', which in turn is characteristic of writing for the Beguines. The editor provides a detailed summary of the text, full glossary and notes as well as an account of the language. To these is added a study of the poet's principal literary techniques, involving both the varied processes of translation and the elaboration of a network of links between stanzas together with the imprint of a personal, lyric quality on the whole.
