ATTENBOROUGH, Richard (1923-2014)
Inscribed Photograph Signed
This distinguished, knighted British actor has appeared in numerous fine films over the past half century -- "The Great Escape," "The Flight of the Phoenix" and "Jurassic Park" among them -- and has directed and produced others. Color IPS, 10" X 8", n.p. n.y. Fine. Matte finish lobby card for Attenborough's 1982 film "Gandhi," which he produced and directed, depicting a large open square with monument in background and limousine in foreground, Ben Kingsley as Gandhi climbing the steps at left foreground. In a light area at lower right, Attenborough signs large and bold in black fineline. Though Attenborough doesn't appear in this still scene, this film was one of his greatest successes, sweeping the Academy Awards that year and earning him an Oscar for best director. Most unusual. .

The first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (1946-53) also served as U.S. senator from Vermont. Signed envelope bearing a five-cent "Toward United Nations" stamp, 6½" X 3½", n.p. n.d. Very good. Original mimeographed newsprint text sheet present and tipped to verso (as issued). Titled "Joint Armed Services Committee Hears Warren Austin," this vintage image shows a jovial Austin half-length at center examining a document, a legislator at each side. Text reads in part, "Warren Austin, member of the U.N. Known as "The Singing Cowboy," this Western star appeared in dozens of films between 1934 and 1954; turning his attention to baseball, he became successful owner of the California Angels. IPS, 3½" X 3½", n.p. n.d. [October 1955]. Very good. Light tape stain at each corner. Original, one-of-a-kind black-and-white snapshot of Autry in full cowboy regalia signing an autograph, surrounded by a couple of fans. At the bottom, in bold black fountain pen, he inscribes and signs: "To Donald / With My best / wishes / Gene Autry." The ink skips a bit on the "ld" in "Donald" and the "st" in "best," and one tape stain imposes partly on the "G" in "Gene." Overall, still an attractive example on a unique image. Likely taken at the Coliseum in Chicago. .

AUTRY, Gene (1907-98), Program with Signature
AUTRY, Gene (1907-98)
Program with Signature
Known as "The Singing Cowboy," this Western star appeared in dozens of films between 1934 and 1954; turning his attention to baseball, he became successful owner of the California Angels. Printed color program, 4to (8½" X 11"), (12pp), n.p. n.y. Good plus. Edgeworn and either misnumbered (printed page 10 followed by printed page 15 as inside rear wrapper, though nothing appears removed). "Souvenir Program" (front wrapper title) of "The Gene Autry Show.. Featuring Gail Davis TV's Annie Oakley" (title page), undated but late 1950s vintage. Numerous illustrations. Heavy stock color front wrapper features, within decorative border, a closeup of Autry in Western garb smiling above his horse's decorative saddle where his hands (one clutching a lariat) rest. At lower left of this image is a facsimile signature of Autry -- almost side by side with this, at lower right of this image, an irregularly-clipped slip (roughly 3¼" X 1¼") bearing his actual signature in blue ballpoint has been neatly affixed. Several small tape stains at margins. Signature undated, but circa 1960. Once Gail Davis's syndicated "Annie Oakley" series (1854-57) came off the air, she toured with Autry in his traveling rodeo for several years. Despite mild wear both to program and signature, an appealing and very displayable image. .

BACHE, Alexander D. (1806-67), Autograph Note Signed
BACHE, Alexander D. (1806-67)
Autograph Note Signed
This notable scientist, physicist and engineer created important surveying maps and greatly advanced the scientific standing of the United States Coast Survey, which he served as superintendent (1843-67); he also served as first president (1863-67) of the influential National Academy of Sciences. ANS, 1p, 5" X 8", Coast Survey Office, 14 June [?] 1856. Addressed to Lieutenant J.M. Gillis. Very good. Mild show-through along three sides (not affecting text) from mounting traces on verso. Boldly penned in black ink in his small, challenging script, Bache notes that "Capt. Palmer who is now in charge of the Coast Survey office in Capt. Bonham's absence is very anxious to have a copy of your report & if you have one to spare, you would ship one by sending it to him." James Melville Gilliss (1811-65) was an astronomer and is remembered for founding the U.S. Naval Observatory in 1842 as well as for the 6-volume treatise, the United States Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere, published between 1855 and 1896. Gilliss headed the naval astronomical expedition to Chile (1859-52) whose goal was to chart critical astronomical observations and also data on earthquakes, geography, the Earth's magnetic field, and even politics and natural science. It's quite likely that Bache is requesting Gilliss to send a copy of the first volume of this influential set to Capt. Palmer (1809-62, friend of Bache's and his West Point roommate as well as topographic engineer with the Coast Survey). A choice little letter with nice associations. .
