ADAMS, Nick (1931-68), Inscribed Photograph Signed
ADAMS, Nick (1931-68)
Inscribed Photograph Signed
This actor appeared in "Mister Roberts," "Rebel Without a Cause" and other films, but is mainly remembered for playing Johnny Yuma on the television series "The Rebel" (1959-61). IPS, 8" X 10", n.p. n.d. [ca. early 1960s]. Very good. Faint tape stain at each corner. Handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of the young star in his best-known role, clad in buckskin and kepi and clutching his rifle. Centered near the bottom, he boldly inscribes and signs in vibrant green fountain pen: "To Donald Burnell / Best wishes / Nick Adams / THE REBEL." (These last two line are preprinted in greytone on the photograph itself, but Adams neatly traces over them.) Adams' sudden death at age 36 makes inscribed photographs rather scarce. .

This pitcher debuted with the New York Giants in 1941, retiring in 1946. Bold signature in blue ballpoint plus "New York Giants / 1941-1946," heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p. 1974 August 21. Fine. ADDAMS, Jane (1860-1935)
Photograph Signed
This pioneering social worker, activist, philanthropist, suffragette, writer, founder of Chicago's famed Hull House, was the first American female to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1931); in 1910 she published her remarkable memoir, "Twenty Years at Hull-House." Handsome PS, heavy stock 8" X 10", n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintest of wear only. Well-known half-length portrait of the reformer in later years, taken by Moffett in 1924 (so noted in lower left corner of image), showing an unsmiling Addams gazing straight at the viewer. Along the blank lower margin, she pens, "Faithfully from Jane Addams," the ink lightening somewhat as the writing progresses. Quite attractive -- and scarce. .

AGHA, Zaro (1774 or 76 or 77?-1934)

According to this Kurd who claimed to be one of the world's most longevous persons of all time and was supposedly 160 years old when he died, he fought in six wars, met Napoleon, had eleven or twelve wives and 36 children -- medicos contested his true age; around 1930 he was "discovered" and became famous touring the U.S. and Europe billed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Bold signature in black ink on a heavy stock 4" X 2¼" card, dated by him 27 February 1931 at upper right. Near fine. Mounting traces on verso, which also bears inkstamped "FEB 28 1931." Accompanied by a second, identical card, this one bearing his inkstamped signature and inkstamped fingerprint, dated in miniscule pencil at lower left corner "Oct. 1930" -- with inkstamped date on verso of "OCT - 1 1930." Believe his tale or not, his signature is exceptionally unusual and scarce. .

AICARD, Jean (1848-1921), Autograph Manuscript Signed
AICARD, Jean (1848-1921)
Autograph Manuscript Signed
This well-known French poet, novelist and playwright was elected member of the Académie française in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS, 20pp (rectos only). 8" X 10 3/4", n.p. n.y. [ca. 1890]. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good, showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean," penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft, for it contains crossouts, insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel, for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title, one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress, for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further, the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909," although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf, Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy of further research. .

AIKEN, George D. (1892-1984), Signature / Unsigned Photograph
AIKEN, George D. (1892-1984)
Signature / Unsigned Photograph
Vermont governor and senator (1941-75), a leader in legislation that created the St. Lawrence Seaway. Bold signature on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p. 1969 July 9 (in type). Fine. Accompanied by a superb and scarce vintage glossy 7" X 9" news agency photograph (International News Photo). Near fine. This candid informal closeup of 21 March 1956 shows the senator in suit, bow tie and overcoat, tipping his hat. The still-attached mimeographed text (printed on cheap newsprint stock and usually absent, but here in very good condition) captions this image "After White House Parley on Farm Bill," and reads in part: "Senator George D. Aiken, Vermont Republican, the administration's farm leader in the Senate, is shown leaving the White House after attending a Republican legislative leaders' meeting yesterday.." A desireable vintage image. .

AINSWORTH, Frederick Crayton (1852-1934)
Document Signed
This U.S. Army officer wielded great influence while in charge of the Record and Pension Division of the Surgeon General's Office in the 1880s, stremalining and modernizing it, and later (1892-1904) as chief of the Record and Pension Office of the War Department; in 1899 he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1904 to major general; publication of the mammoth 100+ volume "The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, 1880-1901" (better known as the "O.R.") was his responsibility. Partly-printed DS, 1p, 10" X 8", Washington, DC, 1896 July 9. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear. Rather cryptic and bureaucratic Record and Pension Office form enquiring about the whereabouts of one William E. Few of Company "K" of the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry in the spring of 1865, followed by a finding that Few enrolled on 23 March 1865 and on 30 April 1865 was in Bladensburg, Maryland and finally on 6 June 1865 was in Alexandria, Virginia. Signed at the conclusion boldly by Ainsworth in black ink as chief of office of the U.S. Army. .
