In the publisher's original full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally generally smart, with some edgewear. 1916. Autographed postcard, signed and dated. Addressed to F.J. Hillier at the Daily News in London, Ransome asks to be sent The Star as well as the Daily News. Ransome went to Russia in 1913, probably to escape his first wife and daughter, initially to study Russian folklore, but after the start of the war he became foreign correspondent for the radical Daily News, covering the Eastern Front, later the Bolshevik Revolution. He was friendly with the Bolsheviks and eventually married Trotsky's personal secretary.

Former owner's inscription to the recto of rear endpaper in pencil. With the original wraps bound in.  Retaining the colophon leaf which explains this work was printed for the Author at the Westminster Pres, London. Ransome is known to have referred to this short story as 'my favourite of all Russian tales&apos.
