A first edition of Jiri Mucha's 'The Problems of Lieutenant Knap', translated from the original Czech by Ewald Osers, collects a sequence of connected short stories with a warm human touch and morals. Mucha was a journalist and writer, becoming a war correspondent for the BBC during the second world war, and was sentenced to hard labour in the Jachymov uranium mines after being arrested in Prague by the communist government in 1951. First edition, with dustwrapper. Stamped with 'Ronald P. Pelsinger' to the front free end paper and title page, and faded 'H' stamp to the front free end paper and half title page and front cover of the dustwrapper. A fine example of work from a master writer and a master translator, 'The Problems of Lieutenant Knap' was critical appreciated upon publication in this English edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, generally smart, with some shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, with some minor handling marks to the boards. The dustwrapper has some chipping to the head and tail of the spine, shelfwear to the extremities, with some age-toning, and a faded 'H' stamp to the front cover. 'Ronald S Pelsinger' stamp to the front endpaper and to the title page. Monogram 'H'' stamp to the front endpaper and half-title. Internally, generally firmly bound. Salomé, lithograph designed by Alphonse Mucha and printed in colours in July 1897 by L’Imprimerie Champenois as part of “L'Estampe Moderne” a series published in 24 monthly parts, each containing four prints, between 1897-1899. Embossed with the L'Estampe Moderne stamp in the lower right margin. Size (print): 41 x 31 cm. Depicted is the biblical figure Salome, the daughter of Herod II and princess Herodias, in a sensual and stylized manner characteristic of Alphonse Mucha's distinct artistic style. The gospel story of her dance at the birthday celebration of her stepfather Herod Antipas, who had John the Baptist beheaded at her mother's request, inspired art, literature and music over an extended period of time. Fin-de-siècle Europe turned Salome into an obsession, parading her deadly dance in operas, ballets, poems, paintings, and more. Now characterized as poisonous and depraved, she was the perfect symbol of the culture's decadent mood and its new wariness of female power. Alphonse Mucha's Salome is erotic and exotic in her filmy costume and stylized hair, an Art Nouveau staple. With her half-closed eyes she stares provocatively.... Salome here is not depicted carrying the head of John the Baptist, but rather in the throes of the dance that gave Herod such great pleasure. Le numéro spécimen et le n°12 sont sur papier vélin. Notre exemplaire est complet du dos et des plats de la couverture générale, et des douze couvertures illustrées. Edition originale de la collection complète de L'image, parue entre 1896 et 1897. Tous les numéros de la revue sont réunis sous une chemise en demi basane à coins, dos à cinq nerfs titré à l'or, plats de papier à la cuve. Quelques frottements. Rousseurs éparses et déchirures marginales. Exemplaire complet de cette revue fondée par la jeune corporation française des graveurs sur bois, et publiée par l'éditeur des lithographies de Toulouse-Lautrec (Au pied du Sinaï, Histoires naturelles, Café-Concert). L'Image compte parmi les plus belles réalisations de l'édition d'art ""Fin de Siècle"". Les directeurs de la revue, et notamment le célèbre graveur Auguste Lepère, fondateur de la corporation, tentèrent d'y rassembler et promouvoir, selon l'idée d'Arts and Crafts et de l'Art Nouveau, le savoir-faire des artisans de la gravure sur bois menacé par l'utilisation de procédés plus rapides et de moindre qualité. Cette collection complète réunit les oeuvres de 106 graveurs et de dizaines d'écrivains, faisant d'elle une oeuvre d'une qualité bibliophilique et artistique exceptionnelles. Son papier Chine en parfait état de conservation rend toute la splendeur et le contraste des gravures sur bois monochromes, ainsi que le camaïeu d'ocres, de vermeils et de verts olives typiques de la période. On y trouve les poèmes et nouvelles de Maurice Barrès, Huysmans, Stéphane Mallarmé, Émile Zola, encadrés d'une variété d'arabesques, de rinceaux, de frises, de lettres ornées et de fleurons. Cette revue constituait en effet un recueil ornemental d'une grande richesse, mais surtout très hétérogène, chaque artiste apportant un style différent, et toujours remarquable. Dans le même esprit, chaque couverture est une oeuvre originale réalisée spécialement pour la revue, représentant les courants Symbolistes, Art Nouveau, Orientalistes et ""Belle Epoque"". In original portfolio with quarter blind grey cloth over pictorial boards. A wonderful collection of ornamental designs in Jugendstil or Art Nouveau style. Each printed in three colours, although the colours selected vary from plate to plate. Each design is monogrammed, either M for the great Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Maria "Alphonse" Mucha (12 designs); MPV for Verneuil (37 designs), or C-L (apparently for Georges Auriol; 11 designs). The plate numbers one and two are used for the ornamented title page and first preface page. The text was written by the French designer and illustrator Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942), one of the foremost French Art Nouveau artists. Jean-Georges Huyot (better known as Jean George Auriol, or just George Auriol; 1863-1938) was known as a graphic designer, and typographer. As noted by Schneider-Henn, Mucha's contributions are mostly linear, although some are pictorial, and those by Auriol clearly show a Japanese influence. Boards soiled, worn at edges; tear in the top margin of Plate 21; stain in the right margin of Plate 23; fold in the lower outer margin of Plate 42, but apart from these few signs of age and use a very good, complete copy.
