Mucha, A. M.
Documents decoratifs. Planche 51. [Bijoux - Jewelry]
Paris, Librairie Central des Beaux Arts, 1901. Folio (46 x 33 cm). Original print. A beautiful print from Alphonse Mucha's quintessential Art Nouveau book, Documents décoratifs. Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech decorative artist, who wanted to bring aesthetic values into arts and crafts. He invented the "Mucha Style" which soon became known as Art Nouveau. His work immediately became immensely popular and remained very sought-after ever since. This plate shows two sides of this gifted artist: his ability to produce fine images in lithography, but also his practical design skills, in this case for jewelry, including pins and rings. Slight toning towards the edges; outer edge with some light creasing; a few, tiny spots, otherwise fine. Very rare, especially in this good state.

Mucha, A. M.
Documents décoratifs. Planches 21 et 22. [Female beauty in blue - posters for Art et Décoration Revue mensuelle d'Art moderne].
Paris, Librairie Central des Beaux Arts, 1901. Two plates. Folio (46.0 x 33.0 cm). Original prints in blue, on blue paper, mounted on white paper with printed number. A fine, uniform set of prints from Alphonse Mucha's quintessential Art Nouveau book, Documents décoratifs. Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech decorative artist, who wanted to bring aesthetic values into arts and crafts. He invented the "Mucha Style", which soon became known as Art Nouveau. His work immediately became immensely popular and has remained very sought-after. These two plates show Mucha's iconic dedication to female beauty, pairing seemingly contradictory quick sketching with a fabulous eye for detail and expression. Very light toning, tiny tear to the up to upper right outer corner of the first plate, otherwise fine. Rare.

Alphonse Marie Mucha
Mucha's Floral Borders: 30 full-color art nouveau designs
Dover Publications 1985 Paperback, 30pp. Perhaps the greatest master of the Art Nouveau style, Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) achieved instant fame in 1894 with a striking poster promoting Sarah Bernhardt in 'Gismonde.' For the next decade, his posters and illustrations for books and magazines dominated the sophisticated arena of French design. This inexpensive volume reproduces 30 exceptional plates from a rare limited edition of Mucha's work, comprising a treasury of the master's distinctive designs in their original full colors. Magnificent, elaborate floral borders are arranged in sinuous curves and harmoniously tinted in in subdued, luminous shades of pink, yellow, green aqua, brown and orange. Lush poppies, irises, orchids, morning glories, passionflowers and other blossoms mingle with foliate patterns and stylized vines. Chosen for ornamental appeal and as inspiration for artists, these 30 glorious borders are ideal for framing text or copy on advertisements, posters, bookplates, stationary, menus, illustrations and a host of other graphic projects. Artists, illustrators and connoisseurs of fine art will appreciate 'Mucha's Floral Borders' for their sheer, unsurpassed beauty and remarkable utility. Staple binding. Large - additional postage may apply. Cover is quite faded with a crease on the back cover. Otherwise great condition. (ISBN: 9780486249162). Good.

Mucha-- Alphonse, La Plume - Alphonse Mucha, 1899
Mucha-- Alphonse
La Plume - Alphonse Mucha, 1899
“La Plume” lithograph in colours after the design by Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1936) printed in 1899 by F. Champenois in Parijs. Signed in the print in the lower left. Size: 71,5 x 27,5 cm. Alphonse Mucha was born in Moravia (now Czech Republic) and is inseparably associated with Art Nouveau, initially called 'le style Mucha'. Like no other, he knew how to depict the Slavic soul with a light melancholic touch. In 1887, Mucha moved to Paris. The entire city was overwhelmed by his work, and the posters were even stolen from the streets. The graceful lines, fresh pastel colours, and lavish motifs in his illustrations of sensual women became the icons of the fin de siècle. In gaining wider public recognition as the ‘Master of the Art Nouveau poster’, Mucha’s success in a new genre – decorative panels (‘panneaux décoratifs’) – played a significant part. Panneaux décoratifs were posters without text, a prototype of today’s art posters, designed purely for artistic appreciation or decorating interior walls.  It was the printer Champenois who invented this idea from the business point of view: to maximise business opportunity by recycling Mucha’s designs for many different editions.  However, it was Mucha who transformed them into a new art form, affordable and available to the wider public, whereas, traditionally, works of art were available only to the privileged few. It was Mucha’s belief that through the creation of beautiful works of art the quality of life would be improved. He also believed that it was his duty as an artist to promote art for ordinary people. He was able to fulfill both of these objectives by means of his innovative concept of the mass-produced panneaux décoratifs. Of the panneaux, Mucha later wrote: ‘I was happy to be involved in an art for the people and not for private drawing rooms. It was inexpensive, accessible to the general public, and it found a home in poor families as well as in more affluent circles.’ The panneaux illustrate all the typical qualities of the Mucha poster – the beautiful women with suggestive gestures, the decorative use of flowers and flowing hair, the subtle yet striking colours – all combine to create a compelling harmony of vision whose intention is to inspire and elevate the viewer. Of which ‘La Plume’ is a beautiful example. Literature: Ann Bridges (ed.), "Alphonse Mucha the complete graphic works" (1980), P27 Price: Euro 7.500,-
