. Tall 8vo. Pp. xxii, 240. Includes the Chinese title printed on yellow paper. With two folding lithographed plates. Half morocco on marbled boards, spine with five raised bands and title lettered in gilt. Bookplate. Second edition (first 1822) enlarged with a table "des principales phonétiques chinoises" devised by Leon de Rosny. Abel Rémusat's grammar was the first usable Chinese grammar printed in Europe. Unlike previous grammars he did not try to impose any of the common categories of Indo-European languages on the Chinese languages he described. Abel-Rémusat distinguishes carefully between classical or literary Chinese and the vernacular based on Mandarin. The two languages are treated in two different sections; "Style antique" respectively "Style moderne". However the last section with analyses of the vernacular is more elaborated and valuable than the classical part. Alain Peyraube: "Some reflections on the sources of the Mashi Wentong" pp. 345-46. Cordier BS 1662.

AIKAWA MINWA (ARTIST) / KÍRIN, OGATA:
Tsushin gafu (God's picture). Osaka, Honya Kichibei, Bunsei 2 (1819).
. Pp. 48. Woodblock-printed illustrations in K›rin style, in very good impression. Leaves folded in the Japanese style. Original paper wrappers, title label on upper cover. Binding rubbed. Occasionally some minor staining. First edition. This is a sketch manual with Ogata K›rin pattern as drawn by Aikawa Minwa. Ogata K›rin (1658-1716) was a famous Rinpa artist. The celebrated Rinpa style, a Japanese genre based on nature which originated in the early 17th century had a revival in the beginning of the 19th century. The typical K›rin patterns are characterised by simplified forms with prominent and smooth outlines. Aikawa Minwa, active 1806-21, is probably best known for his Manga hyaku-jo (Sketchbook of One Hundred Women 1814). Scarce. British Museum has a copy of this manual with slightly different title leaf but otherwise identical.

Lettre sur une inscription phénicienne trouvée à Athènes. Rome, Bourlié, 1817.

Johan Åkerblad (1763-1819), Swedish diplomat and orientalist, was a student of Silvestre de Sacy. He is probably most famous for his contribution to the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script on the Rosetta Stone. During his last years in Rome he was mainly devoted to the studies of Greek epigraphy. Due to limited economical means he only published four small works in Rome, of which this is one. It is dedicated to his friend Andreas Italinsky and deals with the interpretation of a tombstone with Greek and Phoenician scripts. Includes also a Hebrew transcription. Rare. Callmer, In Orientem, pp. 214-218. The Phoenicians were a Semitic-speaking people of somewhat unknown origin who emerged in the Levant around 3000 BC.[8] The term Phoenicia is an ancient Greek exonym that most likely described one of their most famous exports, a dye also known as Tyrian purple;
