Par le peu d'écrits qu'il a laissés (hormis le Code de la Nature, publié en 1755) et l'incertitude concernant sa véritable identité (on a souvent dit que Denis Diderot et Morelly seraient une même personne, et le Code de la Nature fut attribué à Diderot jusqu au début du XXe siècle), son existence et sa pensée sont mal connues. Pourtant, il semble bien que Morelly soit un philosophe à part entière au sens où il serait le premier à avoir développé une philosophie du socialisme, voire du communisme. Dans le Code de la nature, il stigmatise la propriété privée comme responsable du malheur des hommes et met en place une forme primitive de socialisme utopique. Il édicte les « trois lois fondamentales et sacrées qui couperaient racine aux vices et à tous les maux d une société » : 1. abolition de la propriété privée; 2. système étatique organisant l éducation, l'assistance et la solidarité; 3. système de coopération non sans rappeler l'aphorisme de Saint-Simon, « De chacun selon ses capacités, à chacun selon ses oeuvres ». In 1956 gaf Nikita Chroesjtsjov toe dat de processen in scène waren gezet.
