Fred c. Blake 245780
Burning Money: The Material Spirit
Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 277. For a thousand years across the length and breadth of China and beyond, people have burned paper replicas of valuable things"•most often money"•for the spirits of deceased family members, ancestors, and myriads of demons and divinities. Although frequently denigrated as wasteful and vulgar and at times prohibited by governing elites, today this venerable custom is as popular as ever. Burning Money explores the cultural logic of this common practice while addressing larger anthropological questions concerning the nature of value. The heart of the work integrates Chinese and Western thought and analytics to develop a theoretical framework that the author calls a "œmaterialist aesthetics." This includes consideration of how the burning of paper money meshes with other customs in China and around the world. The work examines the custom in contemporary everyday life, its origins in folklore and history, as well as its role in common rituals, in the social formations of dynastic and modern times, and as a "œsacrifice" in the act of consecrating the paper money before burning it. Here the author suggests a great divide between the modern means of cultural reproduction through ideology and reification, with its emphasis on nature and realism, and previous pre-capitalist means through ritual and mystification, with its emphasis on authenticity. The final chapters consider how the burning money custom has survived its encounter with the modern global system and internet technology. Innovative and original in its interpretation of a common ritual in Chinese popular religion, Burning Money will be welcomed by scholars and students of Chinese religion as well as comparative religion specialists and anthropologists interested in contemporary social theory.
9780743288330 Ayaan Hirsi Ali 216553, The caged virgin. An emancipation proclamation for women and Islam
Ayaan Hirsi Ali 216553
The caged virgin. An emancipation proclamation for women and Islam
Free Pr, 2006. Linnen band. Pp: 187. Muslims who explore sources of morality other than Islam are threatened with death, and Muslim women who escape the virgins' cage are branded whores. So asserts Ayaan Hirsi Ali's profound meditation on Islam and the role of women, the rights of the individual, the roots of fanaticism, and Western policies toward Islamic countries and immigrant communities. Hard-hitting, outspoken, and controversial, The Caged Virgin is a call to arms for the emancipation of women from a brutal religious and cultural oppression and from an outdated cult of virginity. It is a defiant call for clear thinking and for an Islamic Enlightenment. But it is also the courageous story of how Hirsi Ali herself fought back against everyone who tried to force her to submit to a traditional Muslim woman's life and how she became a voice of reform.Born in Somalia and raised Muslim, but outraged by her religion's hostility toward women, Hirsi Ali escaped an arranged marriage to a distant relative and fled to the Netherlands. There, she learned Dutch, worked as an interpreter in abortion clinics and shelters for battered women, earned a college degree, and started a career in politics as a Dutch parliamentarian. In November 2004, the violent murder on an Amsterdam street of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, with whom Hirsi Ali had written a film about women and Islam called Submission, changed her life. Threatened by the same group that slew van Gogh, Hirsi Ali now has round-the-clock protection, but has not allowed these circumstances to compromise her fierce criticism of the treatment of Muslim women, of Islamic governments' attempts to silence any questioning of their traditions, and of Western governments' blind tolerance of practices such as genital mutilation and forced marriages of female minors occurring in their countries.Hirsi Ali relates her experiences as a Muslim woman so that oppressed Muslim women can take heart and seek their own liberation. Drawing on her love of reason and the Enlightenment philosophers on whose principles democracy was founded, she presents her firsthand knowledge of the Islamic worldview and advises Westerners how best to address the great divide that currently exists between the West and Islamic nations and between Muslim immigrants and their adopted countries. An international bestseller - with updated information for American readers and two new essays added for this edition - The Caged Virgin is a compelling, courageous, eye-opening work. Frank Lestringant 299835
Cannibals
University of California Press, 1997. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 247. Frank Lestringant, one of the foremost scholars of European encounters with the Americas, looks at the concept of the cannibal and the powerful images and meanings it conjured for Europeans from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century. Combining historical and ethnographic data with allegorical and literary concerns, he describes how European voyagers, writers, and missionaries encountered cannibal cultures and represented them in their writings. Lestringant argues that sixteenth-century travelers and writers gave the figure of the "man-eating savage of the Americas" a positive currency, as a hero who devoured his defeated enemy in accordance with custom, not to satisfy a cruel instinct. Two centuries later, Enlightenment philosophers used the figure of the cannibal in their fight against colonialists and Catholics. But the image of the cannibal suffered a reversal at the end of the eighteenth century, becoming a hateful figure that aroused the primitivist imaginings of writers like Sade and Flaubert. Lively, accessible, and provocative, this unique study will not only be welcomed by readers in early modern history, European literature, anthropology, and religious studies, but will fascinate anyone interested in the myths and realities of cannibalism. Capitalism and Modernity
Routledge, 1991. Paperback. Pp: 172. Vasili Toporkov was one of the rare outsiders ever to be invited to join the Moscow Art Theatre. Although already an experienced and accomplished artist, he was forced to retrain as an actor under Stanislavski's rigorous guidance. This is Toporkov's account of this learning process, offering an insight into Stanislavski's legendary "system" and his method of rehearsal that became known as the method of physical action. Spanning ten years - from 1928 to 1938 - Toporkov charts the last crucial years of Stanislavski's work as a director. Toporkov reveals Stanislavski as a multi-faceted personality - funny, furious, kind, ruthless, encouraging, exacting - waging war against clichés and quick answers, inspiring his actors and driving to despair in his pursuit of artistic perfection. Jean Benedetti's new translation of Toporkov's invaluable record restores to us the vitality and insight of Stanislavski's mature thoughts on acting. ISBN: 9780415017282. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

The Centenarians of the Andes
Anchor Press, 1975. Hardcover. Pp: 150. The author, an anthropologist, travels to Ecuador to interview centenarians, study their environment and write about his findings. "We see that nearly all centenarians are closely involved with the land in their lives and the bulk of their food is grown in the locality." They also live at an altitude of 1700-1900 meters (about 5577-6234 feet). He suggests developing a center to enable scientists and doctors to "make a full and unbiased study, for the benefit of all mankind. Geneticists and environmentalists should work together to discover the secrets of old age-and these people of Ecuador offer us a unique opportunity. We must grasp it."-Conclusion, pages 136, 138, 141 and 142. ISBN: 9780385099141. Cond./Kwaliteit: Redelijk.

9780394582696 Germaine Greer 38804, The Change. Women, Aging and the Menopause
Germaine Greer 38804
The Change. Women, Aging and the Menopause
Knopf, 1992. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 422. In this singularly authoritative, intelligent and audacious study, Germaine Greer challenges all of our accepted notions about the physical and emotional effects of menopause and aging - and thereby lays the foundation for a drastic reassessment by women of the ways in which they contemplate and experience the stages of their lives that society has conditioned them to fear and, ultimately, to regret. Quoting extensively from medical, historical, anthropological, literary and other cultural sources, Greer examines the diverse ideas and theories about menopause and aging during the last two hundred years, revealing how they have and have not evolved, concluding that "the sum of our ignorance still far outweighs our knowledge", and that the sum of a woman's self-knowledge is potentially more enlightening than anything she can learn from "objective" observers of her condition. Greer exhorts women to take responsibility for their own health and to question the accepted "truths" and those who determine them. To that end, she makes a detailed study of the various current treatments for menopause - particularly of estrogen replacement therapy, puncturing the overblown promises made on its behalf by the medical profession and drug manufacturers - and explores myriad less well publicized, traditional and alternative non-medical treatments. She delves into the full range of emotional and physical changes in the menopausal woman and proposes a new "art" of aging based on each woman's acceptance of her own experience and her transformed needs and desires. The deeply impassioned ideas Germaine Greer puts forth sound a rallying cry against the cultural and sexual stereotypes that have long hamperedthe lives of menopausal and aging women. With a profound fierceness of purpose, she encourages women to embrace the freedoms inherent in the change and to forge the serenity and power that can be its most permanent consequences. Powerful and provocative, The Change demands alienation and reaction. It is a landmark book. ISBN: 9780394582696. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

The Change
Penguin, 1992. Paperback. Pp: 472. In this study of the real and fundamental change which women experience during the menopause and which, like other fundamental changes, needs mental preparation and acceptance if it is not to be found unbearable, Dr Greer examines medical theories and treatment over the ages, and finds them often contradictory, excessive and, at times, dangerous. She responds to the traditional attitude of men and society which has been responsible for the creation of an image of the older woman as fake damsel or old crone. Dr Greer has weighed up the facts, the theories and the outright fabrications. ISBN: 9780140126693. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
