De befaamde (apocriefe) krantenkop: 'Fog in Channel: the Continent isolated' moet dan ook letterlijk slechts 'bij wijze van spreken' worden opgevat en onderstreept eerder een zeker 'wishful thinking' van Engelsen die genoten van hun bepaald zelfzuchtige 'splendid isolation' dan de realiteit van het Engelse muziekleven. In de negentiende eeuw was weliswaar veel Engelse muziek schatplichtig aan Duitsland, in de achttiende eeuw aan Italië, in de zeventiende aan Frankrijk, in de zestiende aan Italië en Spanje, en in de vijftiende eeuw aan Frankrijk. Maar omgekeerd speelde ook mee. De Engelsen hadden in de tijd van Dunstable een aanzienlijk invloed op dat deel van het continent dat zij bestuurden, dus een groot deel van het tegenwoordige Frankrijk. In de zeventiende eeuw reisden tal van Engelsen met hun virtuoze virginaal muziek of hun werken voor vedelensembles door Europa, in de late achttiende eeuw dienden de Engelse oratoria van Handel als voorbeelden voor Haydn en Mozart en later ook Beethoven. En verderop in de negentiende eeuw werkten tal van Engelse componisten met veel succes op het continent.
