[John Hervey], Some Remarks on the Minute Philosopher in a Letter from a Country Gentleman to His Friend in London
[John Hervey]
Some Remarks on the Minute Philosopher in a Letter from a Country Gentleman to His Friend in London
London, J Roberts, 1732. Cloth. An interesting and scarce text reviewing George Berkeley's text. The work is a letter whereby an English clergyman is writing to his London friend on his views of Alciphron or The Minute Philosopher. This is the second edition of this text. The Minute Philosopher is a philosophical dialogue by Irish philosopher George Berkeley. In this work he combats the arguments of the free-thinkers such as Mandeville and Shaftesbury against the Christian religion. The work was first published in 1732, the same year that this review was published. Although there is not an author attributed to the title page, it was later known that the title was written by John Hervey, or 2nd Baron Hervey of Ickworth. John Hervey was an English courtier, political writer and memoirist. He was known for writing very brutally frank works such as his memoirs of the court of George II where he gave a very unflattering account of the King and Frederick Prince of Wales. In a full cloth binding. Externally, smart with some bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown, A G Mollard Aberdeen June 1971. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned to edges with the title page heavily age toned with handling marks. Scattered spots throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Thomas Hobbes, Elementa Philosophica de Cive and Eyphma Compendiarium in Religione Christiana Novum
Thomas Hobbes
Elementa Philosophica de Cive and Eyphma Compendiarium in Religione Christiana Novum
Zeidlerum and Lipsiae, Job. Frid and Joh. Wittigau , c1674-1696. Leather. A sought after collection of scarce philosophical works from early English political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury. Written in Latin. Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wear to the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf working slightly loose. Light instances of spotting throughout and with some uncut pages. Ink signature to the front free endpaper. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
