HB. 8vo in 12s (190x120mm), orig. green cloth, rubbed, minor wear to corners, a few ink spots to rear board; short tear to front endpaper, orig. owner's name erased to verso; later owner's name to pastedown; small ink smudge to outer margin of title; occasional light foxing; one gathering working loose, with stitching tender; small marginal stain to lower outer corner of 20 pages. A good copy. Without the Errata slip mentioned by Freeman.. 2nd edition, tenth thousand. This edition was issued as a single volume (the first edition (1871) is in two volumes), and the text is divided into three parts (rather than two in the first edition), with sexual selection in relation to man being separated off as the third part. This edition has ben extensively revised and contains a note by T.H. Huxley 'On the Resemblences and Differences in the Structure and the Development of the Brain in Man and Apes', pp 199-206. Some light foxing to endpapers and final page only. A very good copy. With lengthy, contemporary newspaper review of the book (October 10, 1881) pasted to verso of front free endpaper. A card bearing a handwritten, contemporary acrostic verse on the death of Darwin (in which the first letter of each line spells the name Darwin), with initials R.F.F, is mounted on front fly-leaf. Provenance: 'To the model maiden of the 19th century Jessie Beck from Theodore Beck, Dec 13, 1881', with 3 initial letters depicted as worms (inscription to fly-leaf). Theodore Beck (1859-1899), was a Quaker and British educationalist, who worked under the British Raj in India, and was Principal of the Mahommedan Anglo-Oriental College, Aligarh, from 1883 up until his death in 1899.. Third thousand. This work was first published October 10, 1881, with the second to fifth thousand also being printed in the same year. 'The book was remarkably successful, selling 6,000 copies within a year, and 13,000 before the end of the century. To begin with it sold faster than The Origin of Species had.' (Freeman). Lengthy inscription to Sir Joseph Fayrer F.R.S. to endpaper of Vol. I, 'from his very old friends at Oakfield Lodge ... Denmark Hill, 23rd January, 1888'. Sir Joseph Fayrer (1824-1907) was a British physician who served as Surgeon General in India. He is noted for his writings on medicine, work on public health, including the official investigation on cholera, and his studies on snakes and the treatment of snakebite, in India, including his classic, Thanatophidia of India. Being a Description of the Venomous Snakes of the Indian Peninsula, with an Account of the Influence of Their Poison on Life, 1874..
