Lengthy inscription to Sir Joseph Fayrer F.R.S. to endpaper of Vol. I, 'from his very old friends at Oakfield Lodge ... Denmark Hill, 23rd January, 1888'. Sir Joseph Fayrer (1824-1907) was a British physician who served as Surgeon General in India. He is noted for his writings on medicine, work on public health, including the official investigation on cholera, and his studies on snakes and the treatment of snakebite, in India, including his classic, Thanatophidia of India. Being a Description of the Venomous Snakes of the Indian Peninsula, with an Account of the Influence of Their Poison on Life, 1874.. Fifth thousand revised, with errata corrected (second issue of the first edition, published in the same year as the first). Complete in 3 volumes. Freeman 1453..
