Contents as follows: Volume 1 (1000 copies, 1942, Weyhe): The Primitives, with 20 color and 30 halftone plates. Volume 2 (400 copies, 1945, Weyhe): Harunobu and Shunsho, with 8 color and 44 halftone plates. Volume 3 (400 copies, 1948, Weyhe): Buncho to Utamaro, with 20 color and 39 halftone plates. Volume 4 (1000 copies, 1950, Princeton): Sharaku to Toyokuni, with 16 color and 45 halftone plates. Volume 5 (1000 copies, 1951, Princeton): Hokusai and Hiroshige, with 8 color and 44 halftone plates. The final 2 volumes were still in manuscript form when the owner died in 1948, and were taken to completion by his wife Jean and his many friends and colleagues. Each volume includes biographical information on the artists included. Descriptions of the prints include subject references to legends, literature, politics, and social customs. The physical and technical descriptions of prints and translations of poems found on prints are also included. Finally, there is a bibliography of books and catalogues cited in text. A very solid set, with mild signs of age. VG, all volume exhibit age-toning and general dulling of the covers and spines, contents VG never read. Old poublisher's stock. Slight bowing to covers and foxing spots on title-pages from long-term slanted storage.
