This German pianist and opera composer served as court pianist at Weimar; his compositions include the verismo-style opera "Tiefland" (1903) and "Die toten Augen" (1916), as well as a symphony, piano concertos and string quartets. TNS in German, 1p, 5 3/4" X 4", Berlin, Germany, 1930 October 19. Addressed to Ludwig Bisschopinck. Near fine. Good, brief music content on a heavy stock postal card, explaining that he never wrote an original composition for two pianos, but that he did write two piano concertos, Opus 2 and, more recently, Opus 12. Rather uncommon. .

ALBONI, Marietta (1826-94)
Signature and Portrait
This famed Italian contralto opera singer is considered one of the greatest of the 19th century, and was enormously popular in performances throughout Europe from the 1840s through the 1870s. Bold full signature ("Mari'a Pepoli nata Alboni") dated "Londra 12 Juglio 1872" (London, 12 june 1872) on a 4 3/4" X 1 3/4" slip. Very good. This has been neatly tipped to the blank lower margin of a handsome 6" X 9" steel engraved portrait of her -- a half-length likeness of a very young Alboni clutching a cape about her, a sheaf of rolled-up music in left hand. Interesting and attractive. .

ALEXANDER, Ben (1911-69), Inscribed Photograph Signed
ALEXANDER, Ben (1911-69)
Inscribed Photograph Signed
The one-time silent film child star found fame again in a far different media -- television -- when he played Officer Frank Smith on Jack Webb's "Dragnet" (1952-59). IPS, 8" X 10", n.p. n.y. [ca. 1960]. Very good. Light scotch tape stain at each corner; mild wrinkle at left center. Glossy publicity portrait for the 1958 film "Man in the Shadow," a half-length informal shot depicting Alexander as a deputy sheriff, sleeves rolled up and hands on hips. He inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint at lower right (a darkish area, making for fair to poor contrast only): "Best Wishes! / Ben Alexander." A scarce autograph despite contrast that leaves much to be desired -- and priced accordingly. .

ALLEN, Rex (1920-99)
Inscribed Photograph Signed
One of the last of the singing cowboys, known as "Mister Cowboy" and "The Arizona Cowboy," Allen starred in cowboy films of the 1950s and is credited with composing 300 songs, among them "Crying in the Chapel" (1953). Uncommon glossy oversize IPS, heavy stock 16" X 20", Kankakee, IL, 1961. Very good. Image is superb and unflawed, but ink contrast is good only. Handsome head-and-shoulders closeup of a smiling Allen in plaid shirt, scarf and white ten-gallon hat, inscribed enormously in the light area above his hat in blue ballpoint: "To Donald / My Best Always / Rex Allen / 1961 / 'Kankakee.'" Very attractive and unusual despite mediocre ink contrast -- likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose, but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece, probably one of a kind in this large format. Striking display item. .

Just left of center, Allen signs huge and bold in blur ballpoint. Undated but circa 1960, the height of his fame. .
