Bos, printed separately on heavy paper by the lithographers' firm of P. Trap. Bound in the original publisher's printed boards, spine neatly reinforced with paper, floral shelf label, old institutional stamp to first free endpaper and to title. In a very good condition. Untrimmed, clean copy. ~ First and only Dutch edition. Very rare. Translated from the English "The Cape and the Kafirs; or, Notes of five years' Residence in South Africa", published in 1852. Alfred Whaley Cole (1823-1896) spent five years in the Cape Colony after the ship he sailed in 1841 to New Zealand wrecked off coast of Cape Town. In 1856 he left England again and returned to Cape Town, becoming a lawyer and a judge. He wrote extensively. His "Three Idylls of a Prince", written on occasion of Prince Alfred's first visit to the Cape, said to have "heartily amused" Queen Victoria and the Princess Royal. - Cat. Plus 3 copper-engraved illustrations of coins, obverse and reverse. Different woodcut device to each title-page, woodcut head-and tail-pieces. HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary overlapping laced vellum, faded manuscript title in contemporary hand to spine, unobtrusive remnants of old blank ticket at foot, vellum darkened in places, small wormhole on spine and some traces inside cover; minute contemporary inscription inside cover and at foot of verso of first free endpaper, two old stamps to title-page, smudged lower corner of two leaves in the second work. In a very good condition. Fine interior, very well preserved. ~ FIRST EDITION. Gisbert Cuper (Gijsbert Kuiper; Gisbertus Cuperus) (1644-1716) was antiquary, philologist and Dutch politician. He was an avid collector; in 1710, he estimated that he had collected 100 volumes of letters, describing this as "a little treasure of paper and literature". See also the excellent biographical essay: "Digging for Antiquities with Diplomats: Gisbert Cuper (1644-1716) and his Social Capital" (Bianca Chen, Republics of Letters, May 2009). ~ [BOUND WITH:] Johannes Arntzenius: Dissertationes binae, quarum prior agit de colore et tinctura comarum, posterior de civitate romana apostoli Pauli. (Utrecht, Guilielmum Kroon, 1725). The work comprises of two dissertations. The pagination is consecutive. Fascinating very early dissertation on hair treatment, styling, dyeing and bleaching, accompanied by one on the Apostle Paul's City of Rome. Extremely rare. H-2 OUT .

Each volume with a letterpress title-page and a second title-page with cartouche surrounded by engraved illustrations. HARDCOVER, first volume bound in beautiful contemporary full calf, spine with gilt tooled raised-bands between compartments, black morocco lettering-piece in gilt to second compartment, direct gilt lettering to fourth, marbled endpapers and edges, rare original printed wrapper of an installment bound at end; extremities trifle rubbed. In fine condition, splendid interior. The 3 other volumes are all in the original publisher's full cloth, one in a different colour, large gilt lettering on each cover, spine richly decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. Volumes II+III are more used, bit foxed in places not affecting the plates, have chafed extremities and slightly worn spines, the first leaves are frayed and there are some repairs for tears and one or two untreated tears without loss. Volume IV has some wear to joints but inside is in fine condition with one neat repair to verso of a plate. Together a very good complete set. ~ FIRST EDITION. Rare complete set of this legendary publication. With all the 48 hand-coloured double-page lithographic plates. H-3 .
