Edges heavily worn and corners rubbed through. Front free endpaper is damaged and tape-repaired. The binding is very shaky, but the text is unmarked. Badly damaged but readable, OFFERED AS-IS. The spine is badly chipped and torn, leaving the front and back covers weakly attached. The spine is also stained and has a large handwritten notation near the bottom. Old label inside front cover. The paper, being old newsprint, is tanned and brittle with age; there is some mild occasional chipping on the edges, and some pages are torn. LACKS the March 6, July 17, and Dec. 11 issues for 1897, and the Feb. 5, March 26, April 2, and May 21 issues for 1898. A fragile book in need of rebinding and gentle handling, but still useful for research and reference. RARE final volume of the Catholic weekly newspaper THE CATHOLIC REVIEW, which was published in New York from 1872-1898. This volume spans January 2, 1897 through October 9, 1898. Contains reporting on events of American Catholic interest, editorial columns and serial fiction, reporting on the actions of Pope Leo XIII, and lots of interesting old advertisements.
