ROTHENBERG, FRITZ-GUENTHER
Doomed to Live - an Epitaph to a Great Love
Lewes, East Sussex, The Book Guild. 1991, First Edition. (ISBN: 0863326544). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. The author was born in Danzig, where he practised as a barrister until Nazi persecution forced him to flee to England, arriving three weeks before the outbreak of war, where eventually he was released from internment and entered the catering business, rising to managerial status in the Grand Metropolitan chain. This biography tells of his marriage of convenience so that he can find domestic employment and his subsequent internment on the Isle of Man hastens the arrangement's failure and he begins to work towards a reunion with his wife and son, the family from whom the political situation in Germany had imposed his divorce. From his earliest days as a boy soldier at the end of the First World War to the present, life's harshest experiences have not daunted his stoical acceptance of hardship and his story is told with uncompromising honesty and fortitude. 3. SISMAN, ADAM
The Professor and the Parson - a Story of Desire, Deceit and Defrocking
London, Profile. 2019, First. (ISBN: 9781788162111). Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. An As New unmarked copy with an As New dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 231 pages. 27 illustrations. One November day in 1958, the celebrated historian Hugh Trevor-Roper received a curious letter. It was an appeal for help, written on behalf of a postgraduate student at Magdalen College, who complained that he was being persecuted by the Bishop of Oxford. Curiosity piqued, Trevor-Roper agreed to see the man calling himself 'Robert Peters'. It was to be the start of an investigation he would pursue for the next quarter of a century. Beginning with the detailed dossier Trevor-Roper kept on Peters, Adam Sisman uncovers the extraordinary life of one of England's most eccentric conmen, a serial seducer, a fraud, a bigamist - and possibly the last Anglican clergyman to be formally defrocked . Though he lacked any academic qualifications, Peters succeeded in being appointed to teaching posts in universities from Colombo, Ceylon to Columbus, Ohio - and almost everwhere in between. Despite being didmissed, deported from country after country and repeatedly exposed in the press, Peters always bounced back - leaving a trail of destruction that included at least eight marriages, three prison sentences, an investigation by the FBI and a disastrous appearance on the TV programme 'Mastermind'. STEEGMULLER, FRANCIS
Cocteau - a Biography
London, Macmillan. 1970, First Edition. (ISBN: 0333012496). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gold title on brown cloth boards which has just a touch of wear to spine head. Internally there are some minor marks to lower closed edge else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket has a repaired closed tear and wear to edges and is not price clipped. xiv + 583 pages. 45 illustrations. Jean Cocteau, who died in 1963 at the age of 74 after 58 years of kaleidoscopic activity in the arts, was a fascinating and paradoxical figure. With the astounding variety of his work - as poet, novelist, playwright, artist and film-maker (merely to begin at the top of the list) - and the contradictions of his private life, the charm and the nastiness, the generosity and the egotism, the poise and anguish of an opium addicted homosexual who was equally welcome in the aristocratic drawing rooms of Paris and the raffish waterfront bars of Toulon, and who crowned a life among the avant garde by entering the ultra conservative precincts of the Académie Française. He provides a rich and challenging subject for biography. Francis Steegmuller is admirably qualified for this task having written the definitive biography of Maupassant and many other biographies. LIMB, SUE AND CORDINGLEY, PATRICK
Captain Oates - Soldier and Explorer
London, Leo Cooper. 1983. (ISBN: 0850524725). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy which has minor indentations to front. 235 pages. 43 illustrations. 7 maps. A well researcked and beautifully presented book with fine photographs of Oates's life (1880-1912) and his time in Antarctica. The authors have produced a fascinating character study of a quintessential British hero. The 'soldier' as Oates was known, was not perhaps ideal for teamwork being a solitary man whose uncompromising views could irritate those easily offended. However, his frequent bouts of sourness towards Scott and others were mitigated by his common sense, practical abilities and his inimitable strength of character. B2E. Near Fine/No Jacket.
