MALMÉN, PER:, Mönster för marmormålning (Patterns of faux marbling painting). Part one (all publ.). Stockholm, Gustaf Chelius, 1895.
MALMÉN, PER:
Mönster för marmormålning (Patterns of faux marbling painting). Part one (all publ.). Stockholm, Gustaf Chelius, 1895.
. Large folio. (39 x 54 cm). Pp. (4). With ten lithographed plates of different kinds of marbles. Text leaves with some marginal tears, some plates with a few spots in margins and some plates with tears at the outer margins but overall a very good copy. Original half cloth on grey boards, cotton ties, lightly rubbed. First and only edition of this scarce book, the first of its kind in Sweden. Per Malmén studied in Paris in the 1870s and became a distinguished art marbling painter. It is rumoured that he executed several marbling works at the Louvre, but this has not been proven, mainly because the artists did not sign their works at the time. This impressive manual was used at the Technical School in Stockholm where Malmén taught for many years. The plates depict several kinds of marbles titled: Vert de Mer, Jaune de Sienne, Chateau-Landon Rance, St. Anne, Marbre de Kolmården Granit, Portor, Bleu Fleurl Rance and Breche Violette. The text instructs how to create various types of marbling patterns. Ref.: Fredrik Thörnqvist: "Marmoristen & Målarmästaren Per Malmén" 2011.

SCHMITT, HELENE:
Stickereien (Embroideries). Entwürfe von Helen Schmitt. Auf Stein gezeichnet von der Verfasserin. Parts I-III (all published). Basel, Wassermann & Schäublin & Dresden, In Kommission bei der Verlagshandlung Wilhelm Baensch, 1906-7.
. Large folio (41 x 52 cm). Comprises twenty-four beautiful coloured lithographed plates (one double-page) printed on strong cardboard of different colours, some highlighted in gold. Together with one leaf of foreword and three leaves with explanatory text and photographic illustrations. As issued in loose sheets in original illustrated stiff wrappers, with some wear and neat restorations. Housed in specially made cloth portfolio by Atelier Devauchelle in Paris. First and only edition, self-published by the artist. We assume in a very small number.A gorgeous Art Nouveau work with decorative ornamental designs for embroidery but could also be used for other techniques; wood painting and carving, book covers, furnitures, curtains, clothes, etc. Helene Schmitt was a teacher of embroidery at the Frauenarbeitsschule in Basel. Some of her works were exhibited at the Basel Trade Exhibition of 1901. According to Schmitt's foreword: "The designs for embroidery, which are available here in lithographic form, are a selection from the drawings that I designed as head of the class for coloured embroidery at the Woman's Work School in Basel over the past 5 years. Part of the work was exhibited at the Basel Trade Exhibition from 1901 for the first time. Since then I have mostly reworked the designs and now publish them in this new form ... The patterns were created for the needs of my pupils and were implemented in the school itself. Our school is not a technical school and the embroidery courses are attended by the schoolchildren for a longer or shorter period according to their wish. One will therefore find among these sheets, in addition to technically very simple works, also more complicated ones; however, the technical requirements never exceed the level of what can be acquired in a similarly organized school. I know that the artistic appeal of such women's work does not just depend on the template, but essentially also on how much taste and care is put into the technical part of the work. Unfortunately, very little of these intentions can be seen in the lithographic plates. Photographic illustrations have therefore been added to the brief explanations of the text sheets. They should show the effect of the whole and clarify the technical treatment. In addition, the text about the technique and the material will provide the necessary information ... The drawings should also have some value for non-embroiderers who know what is important using a pattern. Most are easy to implement in a different technique; some of the borders are suitable for wood painting ... " A wonderful work in genuine Art Nouveau style. A few plates with small crease at corners but overall a very good set. Very rare in the market.

TZARA, TRISTAN / DELAUNAY, SONIA (Ills.):, Le coeur à gaz: costumes de Sonia Delaunay. [Paris], Jacques Damase, [1977].
TZARA, TRISTAN / DELAUNAY, SONIA (Ills.):
Le coeur à gaz: costumes de Sonia Delaunay. [Paris], Jacques Damase, [1977].
. Narrow folio portfolio. Size: 21 x 45 cm. As issued on heavy paper. With 51 numbered pages printed on recto only on (17) folded sheets + 2 pages and one blank. Comprises the text of the play "Le coeur à gaz" by Dadaist writer Tristan Tzara. Accompanied by twelve lithographs by Sonia Delaunay. Includes seven theatre costumes by Sonia Delaunay which are colour reproductions of the gouache maquettes made for the performance at Théátre Michel in 1923, two more double page lithographs (one issued as extra title page and one with two costumes) and three lithographed decorations in the text. Original card covers with striking design in black, red and cream. Limited edition of 150 copies, of which this is no. XXI (of XXV reserved for collaborators) on this publication and signed by S. Delaunay on the colophon. (The first 25 copies, nos. 1- 25, in the series were accompanied by a supplementary suite of 7 signed lithographs). A gorgeous copy of this beautiful and scarce work. Tristan Tzara (1896-1963) was the famous Roman-born writer and artist who was known to be one of the central figures in the anti-establishment Dada movement. His noted play "Le cÏur à gaz" was first staged as part of the 1921 "Dada Salon" at the Galerie Montaigne in Paris. It was written as a parody of classical drama in the form of an absurd dialogue between characters named after human body parts; mouth, ear, eye, nose, neck and eyebrow (Tzara himself). The second stage production, also titled "Le CÏur à barbe" was performed at Théátre Michel in July 1923. Sonia Delaunay, the famous Ukrainian-born French artist, designed and costumed the production. She created bright-coloured eccentric geometric-shaped suits of thick cardboard. The play has been seen as the last event in Dada's development as a cultural movement.
