Fredereka or "Eka" was born into a wealthy Scottish family. She travelled most of her life, published a susccession of travelogues and painted over a thousand watercolours from around the world. She arrived in Hilo, Hawaii in October 1879 and made an ascent to the crater of the volcano Mauna Loa. She was among the first artists to paint the active volcanoes. Robinson p. 94.
