. Small 4to. Pp. (ii), 127, (1), 128-503, 46, (2). With parallell text in Chinese and Portugese. Native contemporary half calf, spine rubbed with some loss of calf, expertly restored. Old ownership stamps on title. Some minor flaws; title page has one small loss at inner margin and about fifty pages affected at outer upper right corner by worming but no loss of text. Last two leaves dusty and chipped at edges of which one strengthened at lower margin (no loss). First edition. Father Gonçalves produced several books for Portugese students. "Arte China" provides a thorough and very practical introduction to many aspects of the Chinese language. The appendix is a comparative phonetic study of the pronunciation of Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. The work was printed at the Collegio de San Jose at Macao by Portugese priests on a press which had been lent to them in 1827 after the "Gazetta de Macao" had closed down. . A remarkably well-preserved crêpe paper book collection of Japanese fairy tales translated into Spanish. Hasegawa published two Spanish sets each of ten volumes. This set titled "Leyendas y Narraciones Japonesas" contains following works: 1. La Boda De los Ratones; 2. La Sierpe de Ocho Cabezas; 3. La Liebre de Inaba; 4. El Espejo de Matsuyama; 5. La Medusa Candida; 6. El Principe Brillante; 7. La Olla Mâgica; 8. Sippeitaro; 9. El Brazo del Ogro; 10. La Cascada Maravillosa.Small 18mo (15.2 x 10.3 cm). Fukuro-toji bound, spine covered, silk ties. Each book contains about 9 -11 lvs including covers. Beautifully illustrated with woodcuts throughout. As issued, kept in its original paper box, original tissue wraps preserved (two sets). A rare set, unique in mint condition (first volume has a very light mark from a paper band holding the books together). Takejir› Hasegawa (1853-1938) was a Tokyo-based publisher who specialised in Japanese books translated into European languages. He employed renowned foreign residents as translators and noted Japanese artists as illustrators. Gonzalo Jiménez de la Espada (1874-1938), a Spanish orientalist and teacher who resided in Tokyo between 1907 and 1917.

. A collection of six double page exquisite coloured woodblock prints (size: 21 x 53 cm) after paintings by Matsumura Goshun, repainted by Yamada Shokei. The prints are all in mint condition, each with printed signature and seal. Housed in the original paper envelope with coloured decoration and text printed in black. Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811) was a painter of the Edo period, pupil of the painter and poet Yosa Buson and founder of the Shijô school of painting.

Grill (1736-92) was a Swedish merchant and director of the Swedish East India Company. He resided for about seven years in Canton as resident supercargo in the 1760's. Divided into thirteen sections mainly devoted to railroads within the country but deals also with roads, waterways, various other ways of transportation, telegraphs, telephones, cables and radio facilities. Meyer Robert Guggenheim (1885-1959) was a Major in the Infantry during WW1. Between 1923 and 1925 he served as Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Chief of Staff and in 1953 he was appointed US ambassador to Portugal.

Contemporary half calf on paper boards, spines with five raised bands decorated in gilt and with title labels, lightly rubbed. First German edition translated from the original French edition (Paris 1756-58). The last volume has the subtitle: "Genealogisch-Chronologische Einleitung". This important work on the peoples of central Eurasia includes the first scholarly study of the Mongols based on Islamic and Chinese sources. Joseph de Guignes (1721-1800) was a renowned French orientalist who succeeded Étienne Fourmont at the Bibliothèque royale in Paris. He maintained that the Chinese nations had their origins in Egyptian colonisation, a view to which, despite all refutations, he stubbornly adhered.
