Pp. xxiii, 462, frontis plate with tissue guard (view of Seoul), 21 illustrations, 26 plates and maps, plus folding color map at rear, bibliography, original blue cloth over beveled boards, with attractive gilt decorations and spine titles. A very attractive copy with no serious flaws. Hinges are intact and firm, cloth and gilt bright and not significantly faded, slight wear to fore-tips, not really worn through, short pull-tears to spine-ends, with slight loss to cloth at head of spine (under 1/4"). Internally there is no owner's name or other markings to text, except for a tiny "31" to the top corner of the title page. There is no loss or significant wear to the large rear folding map except for a large tear near where it is bound in. A superb copy overall. Quite scarce to find one in this condition since most are ex-library and heavily read. Very Good.

Kanda, Tokyo, Seikosha, 1932. 1st. Hardcover. First printing. 130 pp. 12mo format in blue buckram with gilt spine titles, dust jacket. Laid in: business card of Canadian author and diplomat Kenneth Kirkwood to a Canadian Trade Commissioner, both of whom lived in Tokyo in the 1930s. (Mr. Kirkwood was the author of "Unfamiliar Lafcadio Hearn", 1936.) Text is very fresh and unworn with some wear to extremities, cloth not faded or soiled, hinges tight. There extensive pencil notes to one of the stories, mostly in Japanese. These are very light and could be erased. The very fragile dust jacket is Good with considerable edge-wear and tears, some chipping, mostly to the spine-ends, some inside tape repair. A Nearly Fine/Good copy. The six stories and essays included in the book are: At a Railway Station, Literature and Political Opinion, Kusa Hibari, The Story of Miminashihoichi, The Japanese Smile, and On Reading. This book is not listed in the Trussel bibliography. When contacting Mr. Trussel we were informed tha they were not aware of this book. They kindly provided a translation of the publisher's label. Very rare Hearn item. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

First printing this two-volume set produced to give an in-depth introduction to embassy staff, business people, etc. who came to live in Japan, pre-WWII. Volume I: 291 pp. 69 photo plates, large folding map of Japan in rear of book, large thick octavo format in coarse brown cotton cloth, dust jacket. Volume II: 305 pp. 60 photo plates, same format as Volume I. Both housed in the original publisher's slipcase/box of brown stiff cardboard with titles in black, nicely constructed with brass brads. Both texts are in Fine condition with the exception of some spotting to the edges of the text block. The fragile dust jackets are bright and fresh, with a few minor edge-tears and some edge-wear. These books do not appear to have been read. Condition is Nearly Fine/Nearly Fine, same for the box. Laid in: background information package for Canadian embassy staff, circa 1978, about 10 pp. Also, promotional material for several books related to Japanes Art and Classical Dance, circa 1935, with order form. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
