Denonn, Lester, edited and with introduction by,
The Wit and Wisdom of Bertrand Russell.
Boston, Beacon Press, 1951. VG in G DJ. Earl Russell was born on May 18, 1872, in Trelleck, England, the grandson of the famous Liberal Prime Minister, Lord John. Russell. He was completely orphaned at the age of three, having lost his mother during his second year. At this early age he first displayed his faculty for being, voluntarily or involuntarily the subject of litigation. Two freethinkers were designated as his guardians to the dismay of his grandparents who succeeded in having the will set aside. His private education was largely under the influence of his grandmother, and he was brought up by German and Swiss governesses and by English tutors who lasted as long as they displayed no agnostic tendencies. Russell surreptitiously read books in his grandfather's library, which served as his schoolroom. He was introduced to Euclid at the age of 11 where his initial disappointment was in finding that Euclid began with axioms. Bertrand liked nothing left unquestioned. DJ edges tanned with some tears.
