Washington, D.C., White House Historical Assn, (1997). VG ornament gilt border pictorial of Franklin Pierce White House. Ornament shows White House during Pierce's term in office with gilt border and burgundy ribbon on velvet boards in green box. with gilt decoratiion and lettering. Eight page descriptive booklet tells about the Pierces who left the White House in 1857. The pictorial of the White House shows the Greenhouse that he had rebuilt after expansion of the White House caused it to be razed. After his leaving office they returned to Concord. In the summer of 1857 they joined their close friend Nathaniel Hawthorne in Europe, crossing by steamship, for a grand tour. They were entertained at all the royal courts. Back home retirement was difficult for the Pierces. Pierce bored by private life drank too much, she mourned her dead sons, and they disagreed strongly over the Civil War. Pierce was pro-southern. More of their biography is on the accompanying descriptive pamphlet.
