The binding is lightly bumped with a small, light stain to the front cover & a narrow band of black staining along the front edge of the rear cover. The dust wrapper is rubbed & chipped with several tears & small pieces out & with soiling to the rear panel. There is a larger piece out of the head of the jacket spine. 46 & [1] pages. Black-and-white illustrations. The top margins of the pages are slightly rippled. Very good in a good dust wrapper.

The story of illustrator Randolph Caldecott told for children. Very good .

Fine. An illustrated brochure for an exhibition held at the Children's Literature Center of the Library of Congress as part of its celebration of International Children's Book Day 1994. Laid in is a program printed on a sheet of gray paper. On one side the events of the celebration are listed: speeches from staff of the Children's Literature Center and an address by Etienne Delessert, "Realism or Fantasy?", followed by the opening of the exhibition "Of Realism and Fantasy: Etienne Delessert: A Retrospective" and a reception. On the verso is a full-page essay on Delessert and his work. The exhibition toured in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere in the United States before coming to the Library of Congress. Fine .

The covers are rubbed and soiled with wear to the edges and corners and the spine is chipped. The pagination is as follows: pages [i]-vi, [i], 8-165, & [3]. The top edges of the title and preface pages have been clipped with no loss of text. There is offsetting and occasional foxing throughout with several page corners creased. An early owner's name is penned at the top of page 136. A complete copy which would be well worth rebinding. The 4-page preface to this French language book of Fables for American seeking to learn the language is in English. This little volume includes a 67-page French-English glossary on pages 99 through 165 and a 3-page catalog in English of "Books published and for sale by Warner & Hanna". Fair .

Two volumes uniformly bound in early brown calf with gilt titled leather labels and gilt rules on the spines. The warped covers are rubbed and scuffed and the leather is splitting along the joints. There is heavy chipping to the second volume's spine with partial loss of that volume's title label. 283 pages & 305 pages respectively, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of William Shakespeare, engraved by Edwin after a painting by Zoust, at the front of the first volume. The hinges are cracking and there is a small piece out from the top of the front endpaper of the first volume. Several signatures are slightly pulled. The edges of the first and last few pages of each volume are darkened and there is scattered foxing throughout with occasional light dampstaining. A complete set which collates perfectly with Welch 744, including the presence of the half-title at the front of the first volume. First American edition. RARE. Printed by J. Maxwell, this work contains 6 pieces by Charles Lamb and 14 by Mary Lamb.
