Sand, George [Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin]
Histoire Du Veritable Gribouille
Paris, J. Hetzel et cie, 1920. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. There's something special often about children's books written in French, particularly if they are well illustrated. Sterling condition hardcover copy bound most handsomely in red cloth, with gilt and black lettering and illustrations to front cover and spine, black-embossed designs to rear cover, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Brilliant, colorful illustration in paper, inset to front cover. Engravings by Delaville, vignettes by Maurice Sand, and a particularly fetching black-and-white frontispiece of the young Gribouille. Else and withal, a quite lovely children's book in French. The author, Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, was a leading novelist, poet and socialist of her day. Born on July 1, 1804, in Paris, France, having passed away on June 8, 1876, in her adopted village of Nohant, she is known particularly for publishing so-called rustic novels. This novel was first published in 1850.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Near Fine

Souvestre, Emile
Le Monde Tel Qu'IL Sera
Paris, W. Coquebert, 1846. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Sterling condition hardcover copy bound in marbled paper over boards, quarter-leather, gorgeously presented in a creamy brown finish, with stamped gilt to spine, with gilt title and author, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. No publication date listed, but this is a First Edition copy of Emile Souvestre's dystopian science fiction novel, rendered in English as The World as It Will Be. The novel presupposes a trip to the very distant future in which purposeful breeding (not yet known as eugenics) and technological mastery via steam-power completely transforms the world. This copy features lots of black-and-white figures and full-page illustrations by, well, a guy whose name/s is/are difficult to pin down, an eminent French illustrator, engraver, caricaturist, and pioneer in photography. Is it Charles Albert d'Arnoux? Charles Constant Albert Nicolas? Vicomte d'Arnoux, Count of Limoges-Saint-Saëns? Bertall? Bertal? "Bertal" is an anagram of "Albert." Whichever you choose, he was born in 1820 and died in 1882. 324 pp. 80 black-and-white illustrations in the text, ten full-page woodcuts with tissue guards. Previous owner's bookplate (L.J. Fournier) affixed neatly inside front flap, and his summary of the book graces it, too. Heavy foxing in spots, lighter so mostly throughout. Decorated endpapers both front and rear. The author was the recipient, posthumously, of the Prix Lambert award. This dystopian work of science fiction predated anything by Jules Verne. His daughter became a great influence on a young Eleanor Roosevelt, according to a Wikipedia article about him and this work. Venette, Dr.
Tableau de L'Amour Conjugal
Paris, En Vente Chez Tous Les Libraires, . . Softcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. From the personal library of the noted bibliographer, folklorist and erotophile, Gershon Legman. Short octavo softcover in size, flexible softcover in format, 384 pp. plus 36-page catalog of the publisher Garnier Freres at rear. Marbled brown papers over flexible cardboard, handsomely applied burgundy cloth over spine, title rubbed. Precise edition and publication date unknown, but evidence from endpapers, previous owner of the book (Mr. Richard L. Press) and scattered notes suggests very early 1900s. Adding to the value of the tome is the inclusion of 11 full-page color plates printed one side only, depicting frankly but colorfully male and female anatomy, including women's genitalia, a full male erection, and fetal extraction in case of a medical procedure. Roundly considered to be the first treatise on sexology in Western cultures and medicine. Dr. Venette looks intently at anatomy, reproduction, desire, and impotence/infertility. He discourses upon ancient and medieval authors and argues forcefully for love but against sexuality. It reads sort of like an sex-instruction manual.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Very Good
