Singer, Caroline and Cyrus Le Roy Baldridge
White Africans and Black
Cape Coast, Methodist Book Depot, 1949. Second Impression. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. Stated Second Impression, published in 1949, and with 119 pp. Bound simply in white paper over boards, printed in brown lettering and with brown illustration to bottom right corner. Original publisher's dust jacket present, moderately worns, mildly soiled, with some chipping to extremities, protected in heavy Brodart cover. Duotone endpapers front and rear, and with multiple duotone illustrations throughout to virtually every page. Six full-color plates; these plates and the duotone illustrations were the product "of fourteen months in Africa spent mainly on the West Coast, that district from which the black population of the United States was drawn. Taking no more luggage than we would under ordinary traveling conditions, we moved from port to port and entered the far interior. Such transportation as offered, we used: motor lorries; jungle omnibuses catering only to black passengers; launches; canoes; flat-bottomed river boats; and cargo steamers--nine of these, sailing under six different flags. When there were trains, we rode in them; when none, we trekked. This travel was beset with discomfort and, where sanitation, at its best, is poor, with dangers of tropical plagues. Hotels were few and of the frontier type. We took what shelter we could find. We lodged with missionaries of many nationalities and sects. Traders rented us spare rooms over shops. We occupied Government Rest Houses or, equipped for camping, dwelt alone in Bush villages." [4], 5-119 [1] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Kent, Raymond K.
Early Kingdoms in Madagascar 1500-1700
New York, Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A classic social history of precolonial Madagascar, focusing on the dynastic tribal kingdoms. The publisher's dust jacket has it that "Professor Kent began his detailed research into the precolonial history of Madagascar with the purpose of providing a more balanced historical account than previous accounts had presented. In particular he felt that the amount of investigation into the early kingdoms of Madagascar was insufficient in light of their historical importance. Limiting his endeavor to the period 1500 - 1700, he sought to answer several questions: how, precisely, were the early kingdoms formed; how did they grow; how did they change; why did they change? Product of impressive scholarship, this volume is an important contribution to the study of the Malagasy past as well as a work of considerable interest to students of history and the social sciences engaged in area studies." Sterling condition hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, showing only very minor wear, protected by a plastic coat, dust jacket not being price-clipped. Paton, Alan; Abridgement by Dudley C. Lunt
South African Tragedy; the Life and Times of Jan Hofmeyr
New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1965. . Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear, bright interior, unmarked. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn, protected by a plastic coat. From the publisher's blurb, "The story of South Africa today is inextricably bound to the life of Jan Hofmeyr. For Hofmeyr represented perhaps the last hope for a liberal policy in government as opposed to the present extremist policies of apartheid. The life of J.H. Hofmeyr had an inner drama that was exciting and unique: there was a strange childhood; a prodigious academic career crowned by a brilliant Oxford record; the principalship of a university at age 24; then the administratorship of the Transvaal at 29; then the political career which makes his biography the story of South Africa today."
