Priestley, Raymond E., Antarctic Adventure: Scott's Northern Party
Priestley, Raymond E.
Antarctic Adventure: Scott's Northern Party
New York City, E. P. Dutton & Company, 1915. First American edition. Hardcover. pp. 382. Thick 8vo. This volume has been re-bound in buckram similar in colour to the original binding, with the original cloth from the front board re-laid on the new board (showing silver lettering and silver illustration of tenting in the ice). The new spine is lettered in the same fashion as the original spine. Binder's error: glue stain affecting the gutter of the rear endpaper only. The page edges have been trimmed. There is a four digit number stamped at the top of the preface page, indicating that this volume may have come from a library (no other evidence of such origin apparent). All plates and (three) folding maps present. The maps are in excellent condition. Internally, very clean, with light soiling to only one or two pages. Overall, as re-bound, in very good condition. The first American edition of the work originally published by T. Fisher Unwin in 1914. Spence 939; Rosove 256.A2. Priestley (1886-1974) joined the 1907-1909 British Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, and contributed geological sections to Shackleton's THE HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC (1909). He later joined Scott's ill-fated second expedition, out of which he published (in 1914) this volume, an account of the two winters (1911 and 1912) he, and his scientific team, spent in the Antarctic environment. In 1920, he helped Frank Debenham found the Scott Polar Research Institure at Cambridge. .

Richardson, Sir John
Arctic Searching Expedition: A Journal of a Boat-Voyage Through Rupert's Land and the Arctic Sea
New York, Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1852. 1st Amer. ed. Hardcover. pp. xi, 516, ads [6]. Small 8vo. Embossed black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Tables and in-text engravings. This version published without the plates and map of the earlier UK first edition. Spine and corners inexpertly laminated, presumably to mitigate further loss to spine ends, corners and joints. Adhesive residue to front endpapers, contents show foxing, but are otherwise unmarked and in good condition. The first edition was published in London by Longman in 1851. This edition contains the journal of Richardson's and Dr. John Rae's expedition in 1848 down the Mackenzie River and along the coast to the Coppermine River, returning overland to Fort Confidence (Arctic Bibliography #14489). Also included is an "Eskimo Vocabulary". Richardson was attempting to collect evidence of the fate of Sir John Franklin and his crew, while conducting numerous scientific observations. Ill.: woodcuts and diagrams.
