General shelfwear, faded lettering to slanted spine, a few small white spots to front board, light foxing, front free endpaper excised, evidence of moisture damage to front board, bottom edge of text block, and last few pages. Binding remains tight, and contents clean and unmarked; very good. Amtmann H-1244. Howley, who extensively travelled the interior of Newfoundland in his role as director of the Geological Survey there, and wrote prolifically about the minerals and geology of the province, herein "brought together all the written, oral, artifactual and palaeographic evidence he could accumulate on these indigenous peoples of Newfoundland, the last of whom died in 1829. It was the first comprehensive account of the Beothuks and is still recognized as a scholarly work, worthy of consultation many decades after its publication." Heritage Newfoundland. .
